Editorial reviews

Students of popular science and parents of autistic children will want to hear The Myth of Autism: How a Misunderstood Epidemic is Destroying Our Children, by Dr. Michael Goldberg (with Elyse Goldberg). Dr. Goldberg, a practicing doctor with decades of experience, challenges many of the most commonly held assumptions about this increasingly visible condition. Among Dr. Goldberg's theses is the idea that autism, correctly understood, is not a condition at all but a disease that can be treated with diet and medication. Narrator Clinton Wade gives a clear and measured reading of the research and experience Dr. Goldberg relies upon to make this controversial claim. While occasionally daunting to the lay-listener, The Myth of Autism is nevertheless filled with fascinating and unorthodox ideas.

Publisher's summary

Everyone seems to agree that we have an epidemic of what is diagnosed as autism. But, in the history of our society, there has never been "an epidemic" of any developmental or genetic disorder. Yet, over the span of 30 years, autism has gone from affecting one in 5,000 children to one in 90, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So what is this "autism", which has come to affect the lives of so many? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Goldberg and his colleagues illustrate why autism must be a symptom of a treatable, neurological disease that attacks the brain’s immune system.

Through Goldberg’s personal anecdotes, case studies, and original research, you will come to understand that autism is:

  • Not psychological or developmental—it is a medical disease.
  • Caused by a dysfunction in the neuro–immune system. Similar to ADD/ADHD and chronic fatigue in that they all have different "labels" but are variations on the same thing: neuro-immune dysfunction.

In order to save children from the disease and social stigma of autism, Dr. Goldberg unpacks the myth behind the illness and provides a wealth of diagnostic and treatment information that will transform your own life and the lives of those around you.

Overall good book takes an open mind

Where does The Myth of Autism rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is quite a bit different than most books I read or listen to so that is a difficult question to answer and I will leave blank.

What other book might you compare The Myth of Autism to and why?

I have no book to compare to.

What about Clinton Wade’s performance did you like?

Clinton Wade seemed to do OK for how the book is written. Lots of information and not many chances for expression of emotions even though he seemed to do well when there was.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A documentary of a different approach to Autism.

Any additional comments?

This is a good book with an open mind. I really wish the Author would not have obsessed with the differences in diagnosis. For example, a diagnosis of Bipolar disorder even though it is a psychological disorder Bipolar disorder can be derived from physical or mental abuse creating a psychological disorder. So his argument against what we call Autism is a waste of time for me. Even though I think what he says could absolutely be right about treating someone with Autism. I would instead title the book something like "The Goldberg Solution to Autism" or something much simpler and then compare how diet, allergies, inflammation, medications he uses vs the common methods that have shown little success or have even created more complications.

Hard to argue with!

Very good book. Long overdue explanation of the so called spectrum. Finally a theory that makes medical sense.

If your looking for a book about autism this is it. We have been struggling to make sense of our new reality and after a few minutes of this book things started to click. By the end of the book it all came together. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and finish the book. Don't just accept your new life with autism.

Informative

This is book may not be for everyone. If you have a strong believe in one direction of Autism. Then you may not want to listen, as this book will challenge your believe. I am personally like to inform myself with as much information about a subject as possible. If you have an open mind, then you should enjoy the book. However, the narration is a bit monotoned and could’ve been better. It is manageable.

good read, therapy-oriented

If you could sum up The Myth of Autism in three words, what would they be?

very good book, therapy-oriented. i was hoping for a wider discussion about the theory and less about treatment but for people dealing with autism in their day to day routine it's a must.

Have you listened to any of Clinton Wade’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

good performance

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

i would love to buy a book that talks about the theory in a wider aspect, without therapy issues.

Enlightened Alternative to Autism

I knew I was "Different'" than other girls/children my age and received lots of bullying my entire life. Recovering from a lethal OD in 2005 (age 51), my spirituality intensified. By late 2006, it was suggested by professionals that I might be an Autistic Savant. My social skills and stemming reflect that of a person on the spectrum; however, I've had GI & sleep problems my entire life (autoimmune issues genetically from both parent lineages). My health has had a marked decline the past 18 months, and I'm panicked because I've lost control of my health and well-being, but have financial obstacles preventing adequate diagnostic testing. This book is VERY informative. It has confirmed that more than late-diagnosed autism is responsible for the physical & behavioral complexities that has led to decline in Quality of Life and unknown mortality at age 67. I have now obtained this book's electronic version (eBook) to use in researching my poor health and provide other diagnostic resources for my HMO doctor.

A must read for all parents, med students and MDs!

This book can sometimes get quite technical and the lack of inflection during the narration can make it a bit hard to follow, especially when footnotes and sources are read.
The information contained in the book should be a must read for all medical students, family medicine practitioners and pediatricians and should be recommended for all parents regardless of their child's health as it will open their eyes to potential problems that can be helped.
Very happy to have found this book on Audible.
