Publisher's summary

Western medicine has not been particularly successful at getting people relief from conditions like depression, chronic pain, migraine headaches, addiction, and PTSD. Dr. Tafur helps us to understand why.

I have watched people spend years in frustration and thousands of dollars consulting an army of specialists, without getting real relief from their problem. Because these and others are diseases deeply connected with the state of our emotional bodies. Too often, the Western medical approach fails to address the emotional dimension of illness. This is where traditional plant medicines, with their ability to alter consciousness and open channels of communication to our emotions, offer so much promise.

The stories shared here demonstrate the astonishing - mystical, colorful, metaphysical - effects of ayahuasca and traditional Amazonian plant medicine. Follow Dr. Tafur through the Amazon jungle as he develops a breakthrough understanding of how psychoactive plants interact with the complex network that connects our minds and hearts to our physical anatomy. What Dr. Tafur presents here is nothing short of a paradigm shift for modern medicine, where sacred plants, used properly in ceremony, take their place as important tools in the doctor’s medicine chest, offering the missing elements of emotional and spiritual healing that have eluded us for so long.

Thought provoking on a profound level

This book is a fascinating experience by a medical doctor on the plant drugs in the Amazon.

The last few chapters are jaw dropping.

Excellent book demystifying plant medicines

This is a must read for anyone interested in psychedelics. Dr. Tafur does an excellent job covering mystical topics in a scientifically grounded manner without losing the emotional and spiritual components.

New to plant medicine, this is a safe sane book

You're going to get good rounded pros and cons. I'm speaking from real world experience. Finally a practitioner writing a book instead of a "WRITER". I'm tired of WRITERS posing as experts. If you don't love it, you're in need of plant medicine and living too much in your sickness. Good job Joseph Tafur, thank you for the good work you do.

A truly transformative, credible, informative, and heartfelt book…

With the growth in awareness and understanding about psychedelic and plant medicine healing, it’s more important than ever to have credentialed and authentic voices such as Dr. Joe Tafur in the fold. Fellowship of the River is exactly that: a perfect blend of data/science/medical information combined with powerful, transformational, and heartwarming stories of people who have been healed with these powerful and ancient medicines.

Adding even more meaning to this book is learning about Dr. Tafur’s personal struggles, who as a medical doctor made the incredibly bold and brave decision to not only become a plant medicine healer himself, but to found a treatment center in Peru. We then learn of the touching, tragic, but ultimately redemptive stories of the many people he and his center have helped (where Western medicine could not), including struggles such as addiction, Crohn’s, migraines, anxiety/depression, PTSD, trauma, and more.

As someone who only recently has experienced the power of such medicines for myself, Fellowship of the River provided me with a tremendous amount of additional knowledge, insight, and context into the realm of healing, consciousness, and self-acceptance. Most of all, Dr. Tafur and his work have reinforced and given me additional motivation that I am on the right path in my own healing journey.

I highly recommend this book for psychonauts, alternative healers, medical professionals, and perhaps most of all for anyone suffering from physical and emotional struggles on a long list of those that too often cannot be truly healed through mainstream and traditional solutions.

Must for those considering Ayahuasca journying.

Being a health care provider I loved the mix of case studies observed in Ayahuasca ceremonies combined with moden day scientific explanations for the resultant outcomes. Though I can't claim specific healing that I feel is necessary, I am anxious to partake of ceremonies myself for spiritual enlightment and a re-sertting of emotional and spiritual self.

Wonderful book about healing

Fantastic listen about healing emotional trauma and it’s connection disease, anxiety, depression, autoimmune conditions, and “mystery” ailments/conditions. What is missing in the healing of disease in western medicine? This book sheds a lot of light on the topic. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in psychology, or of learning more about the healing powers of Ayahuasca from a western-medical-trained doctor’s perspective
