Publisher's summary

In this revelatory work, Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson shows how food affects our moral selves, our health, and the environment. It raises questions to make us conscious of the decisions behind every bite we take: What effect does eating animals have on our land, water, even global warming? What are the results of farming practices - debeaking chickens and separating calves from their mothers - on animals and humans? How does the health of animals affect the health of our planet and our bodies? And uniquely, as a psychologist, Masson investigates how denial keeps us from recognizing the animal at the end of our fork - think pig, not bacon - and each culture's distinctions among animals considered food and those that are forbidden.

The Face on Your Plate brings together Masson's intellectual, psychological, and emotional expertise over the last 20 years into a pivotal audiobook on the food revolution.

If the author was not as arrogant....

I agree with the author's views on the treatment of animals, and that our livestock rearing practices need immediate and effective changes that respect these animals for what they provide to us. However, his consistent preaching of veganism/ vegetarianism comes over as arrogant and insulting - comparing eating of meat and dairy products to slavery and the holocaust! Based on his descriptions of his own life he appears to live a life of privilege, I suggest next time he sits on a leather sofa, pulls out his wallet, puts on a belt, sits in his car, etc he should take the same view (as in his book) on his use of these items and go live on the moon. I personally believe in moderation, something the author should learn. As for vegetarianism, to each his own, but in regards to the authors view that this is what humans were meant to be, nothing can be more unnatural than evolving into vegetable eating vitamin B-12 pill popping life forms!
