Publisher's summary

Dr. George K. Simon knows how people push your buttons: your children---especially teens---are experts at it, as is your mate. A coworker may quietly undermine your efforts while professing to be helpful, or your boss may prey on your weaknesses. Manipulative people have two goals: to win and to look good doing it. Too often, those they abuse are only vaguely aware of what is happening to them. In this eye-opening book, you'll discover:

  • four reasons why victims have a hard time leaving abusive relationships
  • power tactics manipulative people use to push their own agendas and justify their behavior
  • ways to redefine the rules of engagement between you and the abuser
  • how to spot potential weaknesses in your character that can set you up for manipulation
  • two tools for personal empowerment to help you maintain greater strength in all relationships

Mandatory reading for today’s world

I wish this book had been available 20 years ago, and I would have read it. It would have saved me so much heartache. This will be mandatory reading for my children prior to their leaving home.

I made the classic mistake of thinking that everyone is just like me. I learned the hard way that they aren’t. There are people who are obsessed with being the dominant one in a relationship. I really like the way the author didn’t attempt to label them. He simply referred to them as character disordered. He also forced me to acknowledge my unhealthy level of neurosis.

Very informative and helpful!

The descriptions of character types, vignettes, and recommended responses in this book are spot on. This book have me such a great insight into the behaviors and actions of covertly aggressive and manipulative people. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Incredible.

I believe that this book should be read in high schools across the country. I have been reading a lot of these “character-deficient” and “personality disorder” books lately and this one is really good at remaining succinct without ever becoming boring. And it covers a wide range of personality disorders without becoming too technical. It would just be a great intro for any high school students to begin to understand other peoples behavior, and have that realization that not everybody thinks exactly like you do (has the same morals, the same understanding of common sense, etc.). With the ending chapters offering really good advice about how to spot these behaviors, and how to protect yourself if you are in some type of a relationship with someone who exhibits one of these harmful behaviors.

Loved it

I loved this book. The most direct and to the point information on covert aggressive personalities than I have been able to find anywhere else.

I liked it. Concise and structured.

Basic in terms of insights but gives a great overview in my opinion. Unless you have read other books on the topic that provide the same info, it is worth reading.

Great audio book

If you're already on the path to understanding human behavior, this gives you a good understanding of not only others, but yourself.

Narrator’s voices were condescending

Overall, the content of this book was pretty good. I was a bit disappointed that it assumed an individual would want to reconcile with the aggressive party and didn’t provide any guidance for walking away.

And the narrator was almost unbearable, especially his use of female voices for the case studies. They came off as quite condescending and I wish he hadn’t used voices at all or made them much subtler.
