Carl Rogers gives a clear exposition of procedures by which individuals who are being counselled may be assisted in achieving for themselves new and more effective personality adjustments. Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology.

Lot of talk about a simple concept
- By Andrea on 09-05-16
Publisher's summary
In this concise book, you will learn how to do Motivational Interviewing (MI), the evidence-based, client-centered counseling approach that has demonstrated effectiveness for a range of psychological, behavioral, and health related issues.
Rather than the counselor arguing for the client to change, the MI approach helps elicit client's own arguments for behavior change. Some of the topics covered include:
- How to prepare for an MI session,
- How to assess your client's motivation using two simple questions,
- How to ask powerful, strategic questions that move a client toward healthy behavior change,
- How to handle "resistance" or discord in the therapeutic relationship
- How to give information and advice in the MI consistent way that is acceptable to the client
The author, an experienced psychologist, psychotherapist, public speaker, and MI instructor, shows how simple counseling techniques, taught in any beginning counseling class, can be powerful when used strategically to tap into clients' own motivation. Anyone who works with people including doctors, nurses, psychologists, addiction counselors, social workers, case managers, family advocates, lay counselors, correctional staff, dentists, life coaches, dietitians, nutritional counselors, physical therapists and others would benefit from the information in this book. The second edition updates the information and concepts presented in the first edition based on recently published texts of MI.

Story
In this best-selling book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists crystallises the great progress that has been made in the development of the techniques and basic philosophy of counselling.

Dr. Matulich's Narration makes MI come alive!
As a member of MINT, I have regularly recommended Dr. Bill Matulich's ebook, "How to Do Motivational Interviewing" to my graduate students and trainees. Having just listened to his new audiobook, I am excited to recommend this as well. Dr. Matulich's cogent explanations of MI skills and his advice about effective communication are invaluable. Listening to his audiobook makes MI come alive, whether you are new to learning MI or a seasoned clinician interested in a review. This audiobook is a wonderful resource! Pam Burke

Good information but poor narrating
The content of this audiobook is fantastic. Great primer on the principle and application of this technique. However, the narrator sounds like he is rushing though the entire book. Not only the speed of reading is fast, there is barely a breath’s rest between sentences. Even when there is a paragraph break, there is no break between. There were a few times where I realized halfway through the next sentence that he’s talking about a totally different topic. There is absolutely no time to process anything in the book as you listen. I took so many breaks and repeated listens just to actually hear the content.
