2016 Voice Arts Award Finalist

A fact-filled guide to coping with compulsive overeating problems by an experienced addiction doctor who draws on many patients' stories of recovery.

Overeating, binge eating, obesity, anorexia, and bulimia: Food Junkies tackles the complex, poorly understood issue of food addiction from the perspectives of a medical researcher and dozens of survivors. What exactly is food addiction? Is it possible to draw a hard line between indulging cravings for "comfort food" and engaging in substance abuse? For people struggling with food addictions, recognizing their condition - to say nothing of gaining support and advice - remains a frustrating battle.

Built around the experiences of people suffering and recovering from food addictions, Food Junkies offers practical information grounded in medical science, while putting a face to the problems of food addiction. It is meant to be a knowledgeable and friendly guide on the road to food serenity.

Changed my life

A few little irritating word mispronunciations but otherwise, an absolute God send of a book. The first time I listened to this book searching for a solution to my food problem, I didn't believe sugar addiction was a real thing. after 2 years of agony and suffering, I listened to it again, I was finally ready to accept the truth. This book has solved the mystery for me and completely changed my life!!

It is well read/written and really helps open your eyes to the dangers, warning signs and offers a better understanding on how to combat this disease. 12 step hype

No need to listen to this book. The author advocates complete abstinence and the 12 step program. The end.

No Easy Fixes Here

An interesting and engaging book and perspective. After hearing it, I realize that being addicted to food is a spectrum. self awareness of where we fall in this spectrum is essential to healing. Dr. Tarman makes a compelling case for abstinence from trigger foods, not a popular stance to take. Great book, glad to have read it.

Eye Opening

Helped me understand my compulsions. Once I understood them, I was able to control them. It wasn’t easy and took resolve and support, but understanding was the key to success, not “will power”.
Worth a listen if you struggle with food. It might change your life like it has mine.

Outstanding!

Would you consider the audio edition of Food Junkies to be better than the print version?

No, I don't think so.

What other book might you compare Food Junkies to and why?

Food Junkies is a unique book so I'm not sure what I would compare it to. It is full of information about food addiction and what it is, how the brain is involved, personal stories and what to do if you are struggling with overeating. The entire book resonated with me. I felt validated in my experience, understand that my addiction isn't my fault, and hope about how to deal with it.

What about Lisa Bunting’s performance did you like?

The performance was fine.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Food Junkies would make a fantastic documentary.

Any additional comments?

I am so grateful for this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks that they may have a problem with over eating.

Packed with info & stories!

This book is full of excellent information, research, and countless experiences of people struggling with food addiction. Hearing their stories was a little like attending AA. I realized many people have struggles similar to mine and I’m not alone. But I also realized I have to make some important choices if I want to be free of the power food has had over me. Moreover, Dr. Tarman has her own story and the solutions she presents, speak for themselves. If your relationship with food has caused you stress or shame, this book is for you. If you are struggling with ANY other addiction, you would benefit from reading or listening to this book.
