Publisher's summary

Beau Lotto, the world-renowned neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and two-time TED speaker, takes us on a tour of how we perceive the world, and how disrupting it leads us to create and innovate.

Perception is the foundation of human experience, but few of us understand why we see what we do, much less how. By revealing the startling truths about the brain and its perceptions, Beau Lotto shows that the next big innovation is not a new technology: it is a new way of seeing.

In his first major book, Lotto draws on over two decades of pioneering research to explain that our brain didn't evolve to see the world accurately. It can't! Visually stunning, with entertaining illustrations and optical illusions throughout, and with clear and comprehensive explanations of the science behind how our perceptions operate, Deviate will revolutionize the way you see yourself, others and the world.

With this new understanding of how the brain functions, Deviate is not just an illuminating account of the neuroscience of thought, behavior, and creativity: it is a call to action, enlisting listeners in their own journey of self-discovery.

Critic reviews

"Deviate is an entertaining read that raises fascinating questions about how we perceive the world. Aside from being an accomplished scientist, Lotto is a talented writer who uses illustrative examples and visual experiments to dazzle and to teach."—The Washington Post

"Provocative...a radical philosophy of perception...balanced by many astute observations."—Nature

"Beau Lotto's Deviate is the beginning of a conversation—with yourself. Based on my years working at Pixar and with Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters, Beau is on exactly the right track for using neuroscience to understand the mechanisms that keep us stuck and the power of paying attention to the mind. And he does it with an infectious enthusiasm that cannot help but draw the reader into this engaging material."—Lawrence Levy, former CFO of Pixar Animation Studios and author of To Pixar and Beyond

Um, wow.

I can only think to describe this book by saying that it blew my mind and confirmed everything I’ve been thinking at the same time. I am not one to see the same movie or read the same book twice. But I will listen to this book again later this year.

Insightful and illuminating!

The content in this book enables deep understanding of your connectome and why you behave in the world the way you do. Our ancestral and direct experiences have made our stack of assumptions, and with this knowing, we can evolve - deliberately. Fantastic book!

Good book, great concepts, tends to belabor points

I really enjoyed the book and the principal thesis is good but the author tends to part himself on the back a bit in making his points and also sometimes doesn't know how to quit explaining and move on.

At least to me these items tended to detract from the point rather than help

Choosing what to NOT pay attention to

This was a good listen even though I never generated the accompanying PDFs to see his experiments. As we have evolved to survive in very different circumstances than we currently encounter, true freedom comes from overcoming our "fight or flight " instinct to choose the things we pay attention to or ignore.

Audio quality hard on hearing impaired

I listened as long as I could but the narrator's voice is either too low frequency or the mic is only picking up deep tones. I had to turn up the volume to the point of uncomfortable levels just to understand some of the words. Wish it would have been produced better so I'd get some value from the book.

Very quiet and boring

Trey to get a shorter version so you can make it. They had no audio engineer who can read sound level? Jus hire a dj... Nor really recommended to anyone.

What you see isn't what you get

So much emphasis is place on reality that we forget what we perceive isn't reality only what our sensory inputs can perceive. They can be deceived. In the gap between what you think you see/sense and what is really there is where you can grow.
