Publisher's Summary

From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. government–approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives. Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by René Descartes to be the seat of the soul.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that so-called alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

What the Critics Say

"Fascinating and provocative. A remarkable exploration of the boundaries of science and consciousness itself." (Rupert Sheldrake, author of The Presence of the Past)

    "A Incredible Book On DMT"

This book was much more than just a book on DMT trips. It was a thoughtful book, allowing the reader to journey with Dr. Strassman through the hurdles that he had to go through to make this clinical studies possible, and the chaos that these studies caused in his personal life. The DMT reports are the most intriguing, depicting worlds and experiences that are similar to a few Castaneda accounts, yet far different in many others, all of which follow a similar theme: DMT takes you to places, not of your own imagination and mind, but to places of perception not available to those in what Strassman calls channel "normal". This book emphasizes the need for a more serious look at DMT, similar to Graham Hancock's take on ayahuasca. The narrator was spot on as well, and contributed greatly to the information presented. 5 stars and more.

"I have an inner calling after listening to this."

I absolutely loved this book. I have dabbled in psylocybin using them maybe 40 times and tried LSD twice with many more uses of mdma, however it has been almost 5 years without any of that. This book opened my eyes to understand that the reason I was using them was wrong. I need to bring the journey inward and begin to process my inter being. As I progressed through the book I couldn't and still can't help but to feel a strange excitement that has been building inside of me. A yearning to recconect with the pshyc world and find my inner fortitude.

    "As Great As Expected..."

Loved it. Joe Rogan's podcast was a major factor pushing me to reading this book.

It was incredibly well told and did a wonderful job of highlighting the biases that possibly could've contributed to the results and interpretations. I was impressed but felt educated at the same time.

    "Dedicated Scientist's Journey"

The author is quite passionate about his work and gives a detailed description on how his medical test was set up, plus the results. The results are interesting, although the initial descriptions of his challenges in setting up the tests and getting the drug was slow to unfold and tedious. You can skip through the early chapters if you wish, as the actual patient experiences are eye(ear) opening and fascinating.

Very refreshing to listen to very well spoken language. Although the material is difficult to comprehend at times, it is fascinating to know that this research still has promise in our tightly-wound society.

Good book. I think he could have gone without all the details about the research projects, like the setup etc.... Overall, just a mediocre listen.

    "Interesting"

This was a detailed account of what goes on in a psychiatric study. The descriptions of what the subjects experienced while under the influence of DMT were surprising and fascinating.

I think the main reason I enjoyed the book is the fact that I'm interested in how this type of narrative is put together. I may have been more interested in the structure than the content.

If you're into learning about psychedelics and spirituality, this book should be on your reading list.

I am so appreciative of the author for not only seeing this research through, but then sharing it with the rest of the world.

"An enlightening look into an under studied subject"
Would you listen to DMT: The Spirit Molecule again? Why?

Yes, it has loads of information that anyone would only benefit from a second listen!

What was one of the most memorable moments of DMT: The Spirit Molecule?

The individual experiences of the study participants.

What about Arthur Morey’s performance did you like?

Arthur Morey made the book thoroughly enjoyable. He isn't overbearing but at the same time doesn't put you to sleep like other narrators I've listened to.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Will make you question your beliefs and perception of reality!

    Any additional comments?

It is very refreshing to see a book written about such a VASTLY under studied subject matter. There is entirely to much bad and disinformation smothering the subject currently and it's people like Dr. Rick Strassman that are willing to do the work to chip away that layer of bad info to the truth of the matter.

    "Open your mind!"

Whilst the first half of this audio was a little technical and dry, the sound basis for the trials and research described become necessary to understand the book.
An outstanding and brave work, which describes and theorises on altered states, and demands the readers open minded thought.
Strange though, that no comparisons to Robert Munroes "Journeys out of the body" were included. Some of the descriptions and conclusions came rather close to it, I felt.
An excellent audio book for the Psychonaut or the curious.

    "Scientific and spiritual"

I chose this book based on my interest in reincarnation and out of body experiences, so I found the start of the text frustrating, with its emphasis on scientific methodology related to the experiments. It was certainly interesting and enjoyable to listen to, with a variety of fascinating reports of the experiences of the participants in the DMT study and hypotheses by Strassman about what these experiences could mean. The reflections on a variety of hallucinogenic drugs and narration about the frustrations by the writer with gaining permission to run the study were of less interest to me, but it was worthwhile to find out about these alongside the possible experiences beyond this life and state of being.

    "Mind-blowing and thought provoking."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would most defiantly recommend this book its so ground braking and ask so many intriguing questions I really think people should know about the work done by Rick Strassman.

    Any additional comments?

This is an excellent book with a really good narrator the experiments done, here are so thought provoking and exciting and so potentially profound it really boggles your brain to think about this stuff.

"When a medical doctor, specialised in mental healt"

When a medical doctor, specialised in mental health, starts talking about aliens, spirits and enlightenment, it's time to get his own mental health examined.
If you like your science books to be objective and based on hard science rather than some belief system, then this book would greatly disappoint you. The author makes some wild speculations with no evidence whatsoever.
