Publisher's Summary

"Toad", the famous character in Kenneth Graham’s The Wind in the Willows, is in a very depressed state, and his good friends Rat, Mole, and Badger are "worried that he might do something silly"…. "First they nursed him. Then they encouraged him. Then they told him to pull himself together…. Finally, Badger could stand it no longer.

"Now look here Toad, this can go on no longer," he said sternly. "There is only one thing left. You must have counselling!"

Robert de Board’s engaging account of Toad's experience of counselling will capture the imagination of the growing number of people who are interested in counselling and the counselling process. In this sequel to the story of life on the riverbank, Toad and his friends come to life all over again. Heron, the counsellor, uses the language and ideas of transactional analysis as his counselling method. Through the sessions, or chapters of the book, Toad learns how to analyse his own feelings and develop his emotional intelligence. By the end of the book, as debonair as ever, he is setting out on a completely new adventure.

Appropriate for anyone approaching counselling, whether as a student, client or counsellor, Counselling for Toads will appeal to both children and adults of all ages.

    "Charming introduction to counselling"

What a sweet gentle tale. Toad is unhappy, and his friends Mole and Rat recommend he goes to see a counsellor Heron who they have seen advertised in the newspaper.

What follows is a lovely jaunt through the journey that is counselling.

Although this is a great intro book for anyone considering going themselves, it is also very profound and lightly touches on many models such as the parent/adult/child ego states.

Unfortunately the chap narrating this has such a lovely voice that when I listened to it in bed, I promptly fell asleep and had to rewind to a part I remembered the next day!

    "Essential Listening for Counselling Students"

I found this audio book a welcome change of format from all my other 'text books'. It is entertaining and informative and I would argue essential for anyone starting their exploration of Transactional Analysis.

    "Brilliant, fun introduction to counselling"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who was considering taking up counselling, or who felt they may need or want counselling. It's a great listen, incorporating many of the incidents from Wind in the Willows and showing them from Toad's point of view. It is also very well narrated.

What other book might you compare Counselling for Toads to, and why?

Clearly, there is a comparison with Kenneth's Grahame's classic - all the favourite characters are there, behaving much as they did in the original, but this book goes much more in-depth and shows the emotions behind the scenes.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I particularly enjoyed the counselling session where Toad explained his history, and also when Heron (the counsellor) showed him the childhood coping mechanisms he'd developed, and was still using in adulthood. The explanations of Transactional Analysis were very well done, too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could quite easily have listened to this all in one sitting, but I want to go back and listen again, in short episodes - probably one of Toad's sessions at a time - to get the most out of it.

    Any additional comments?

I've already found it useful. Even though I've done some counselling training, it reminded me (as I know some of it already) of things you can do to help yourself, and demonstrates very clearly many of the principles of the counselling process. Highly recommended.

"An extremely well narrated, interesting take on Counselling!"

You are never going to learn loads (theoretically speaking) about Counselling from this, however it's an interesting and light heart hearted read! It is what it says on the tin, 'Counselling for Toads' - easy listening.
The best bit about it was how brilliantly it was narrated, I wish I could pick this man to read all of the books to me! 😀🙌🏻🌟

"Brilliant, definitely recommend to all age 9-100."

Listened to this book with my 10year old daughter. We loved it! It was not only enjoyable but also insightful. Prompting much learning and questions for both of us, and found she liked to analyse other adults's behaviours with regards to which ego state they were acting in (no doubt I will regret this as she hits teenage years). Would also definitely recommend to anyone that enjoyed the original story, it is like catching up with old friends!
