Not Indexed!

In the Audible Player this is one seamless recording with no index of species and hence almost entirely useless for practical purposes. The quality of the recordings is excellent as expected however.

Disappointed

The sound quality as a download is excellent, but has it is not indexed on Audible and you cannot switch between tracks, it is basically useless for use in the field!

Index is available

Any additional comments?

An Index is available as a short PDF download from the full audible site (under title). Although the Index is in the cd disk format, it still gives the order of play. Individual tracks can best be accessed in the player by accessing the 36 Chapters in the left margin.

Surely such a disk needs to be indexed!

I am sure the bird sounds are fine, but who wants to listen to a series of bird noises? What I was expecting was that it would provide a search mechanism so that I could listen to a particular bird. Without that, it is useless to me.

Don't buy this!

Any additional comments?

Purchase the audio CD version of this if you want tracks to be clearly and individually labeled. On this version, multiple bird vocalizations are grouped together on a single track, and although each individual call/song is introduced, you have no way of knowing beforehand which species are on which track. You'd really struggle to use this to identify species that you've heard, because it would take you ages to find the recording you're after. It might be more useful if you just want to listen to the vocalizations in order to learn them, but, still, you'd have no way of knowing which species were on which track, so you wouldn't be able to target a particular group. The only redeeming quality is that, as on the audio CD version, the recordings are good quality.

Great sounds but...

What disappointed you about British Bird Sounds?

...all played as one continuous track. I can't play individual birds as separate tracks. Very frustrating...

Useful for learning to identify by call

What did you like best about this story?

I wanted to learn the calls of British birds and this book is a good learning aid.

Any additional comments?

While it is frustrating that the bird sounds are not separated in any way I have quite happily bookmarked as I have listened so that I can go back and listen to individual calls in future.

Great reference

Unlike other reviews I did not expect or require an index. Great audio and a very useful reference.

Great if it were searchable. Just disappointing

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Recordings were excellent, but there is no indexing, so one cannot find a track one wants to hear. Such a collection should allow one to select similar recordings to compare them, to learn the subtle differences, or recordings from similar looking birds to allow the sounds to be used for identifying confusing species. This one does not. A pity as the content is actually rather good - great opportunity for a really useful recording wasted.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Great recordings. No indexing unable to search - silly!

Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrator?

Narrator not the issue

Any additional comments?

Such a limitation should be advertised on the page selling the book, as otherwise you are taking people's money without being straight about the limitations.

Great sound, difficult to use!!

Would you listen to British Bird Sounds again? Why?

Yes, I will listen to it over and over again to try to familiarise myself with the different bird sounds. This is a straight recording of the bird sounds with a simple spoken name of the bird before each recording. No other explanation or guidance.
You have to know the name of the bird first to find the sound recording, rather than matching/identifying the sound you hear in the wild by using the recorded sounds.

Any additional comments?

The Audible download dose not list any of the bird names separately (just chapters 1 to 36)
There is now a PDF download which lists all the bird sounds as individual items.

Chapter 1 = bird sound 1-5, chap 2 = bird sound 6-9, then every consecutive chapter includes the next 5 listed bird sounds (except for chap 20 which is only bird 95 &96)
Disc 2 starts with chap 21 = bird sound 1-4 (on disc 2) then back to each chapter being the next 5 bird sounds until the end.

Although this works, it's a real pain because you have to have a separate download or printed list rather than just scrolling through the playlist on your phone!!
Why make it so difficult to use??
Please, please update the chapter content on the actual playlist.
