Publisher's summary

Heart disease is the number-one cause of death in America. It affects 81 million Americans and is the culprit in one of every two deaths in the United States. Most people think that they are not at risk of a heart attack if they control their cholesterol and blood pressure, but they aren't aware of other major risk factors. The good news is that with the right information and strategies, heart attacks are preventable - even if heart disease runs in the family.

In Beat the Heart Attack Gene, world-renowned cardiovascular specialists Bradley Bale, MD, and Amy Doneen, ARNP, present a new model for understanding and preventing heart disease. They explain the three different genetic types of cholesterol profiles and tailor treatments for each type, using their cutting-edge Bale/Doneen Method, a simple, comprehensive prevention plan that detects cardiovascular disease (CVD) at early stages. Beat the Heart Attack Gene includes easy quizzes and self-tests that show how to determine cholesterol genotype as well as advice for how to apply that knowledge through nutritional and lifestyle changes. For heart attack and stroke survivors, the Bale/Doneen Method also helps prevent recurrences by identifying and treating what's triggering the patient's disease - a crucial step that many cardiologists neglect.

With their proven method utilized by healthcare professionals worldwide, Bale and Doneen empower listeners by alerting them to potential health threats, and then offer personalized, evidence-based strategies so they can live healthy, active lives without fear of heart attack or stroke.

A very long advertisement.

I may continue this later: but for now I stopped about halfway out of annoyance. Its format feels like: here's one aspect of your heart condition, our clinic can help you, here's another, our clinic can help you, here's another, our clinic can help you and we guarantee you'll stay alive until you stop coming or we drop you, here's another, we can help you, ... Very little on the trade-offs involved in heart treatments. For example: they lower your chance of dying from cardiac problems, but raise them for diabetes and cancer often ending up with the same mortality. They'll want you to exercise more but the medicines will increase your fatigue, lower interest in exercise, and lower the benefit from the exercise. The meds give you a continual cough, cause impotence, raise glucose, memory issues, ... They seem to be fan's of the Mediterranean diet without commenting on the inflammatory aspects of the diet. Basically a huge marketing brochure.

Great Learning of Heart Medicine

Enjoying hearing success stories of a more options to heart health than just taking a statin. The concept of genetic, holistic and diet approaches makes a lot of sense.

Great Info for People with CVD

The book has great information, but the narration sounds a little robotic. Also, lots of acronyms thrown around. You almost need a glossary for the terms. However, even though very technical, there is great information to help you discuss your condition with your physician. The chapter on the supplements you can use to improve your condition is worth the money paid.

Don't waste your time.

Maybe it gets better but the first 3 hours are awful. Seem like a sales job.

A worthwhile addition to your wellness library

The authors’ approach is earnest & advances the lifestyle approach to reducing cardiovascular risk as a means of improving health, while also including the necessary medical therapy many lifestyle authors downplay or shun.
My only critique after one time through is the repeated self-promotion. Although I understand their need to protect their IP, it does grate just a bit by the end of the book.
Overall it’s a very worthwhile read or listen.
