Publisher's summary

Some difficult people aren't just hard to deal with - they're dangerous.

Do you know someone whose moods swing wildly? Do they act unreasonably suspicious or antagonistic? Do they blame others for their own problems?

When a high-conflict person has one of five common personality disorders - borderline, narcissistic, paranoid, antisocial, or histrionic - they can lash out in risky extremes of emotion and aggression. And once an HCP decides to target you, they're hard to shake.

But there are ways to protect yourself. Using empathy-driven conflict management techniques, Bill Eddy, a lawyer and therapist with extensive mediation experience, will teach you to:

  • Spot warning signs of the five high-conflict personalities in others and in yourself.
  • Manage relationships with HCPs at work and in your private life.
  • Safely avoid or end dangerous and stressful interactions with HCPs.

Filled with expert advice and real-life anecdotes, 5 Types of People Who Can Ruin Your Life is an essential guide to helping you escape negative relationships, build healthy connections, and safeguard your reputation and personal life in the process. And if you have a high-conflict personality, this book will help you help yourself.

Great insight into the human personality disorder.

I enjoyed the information it was very interesting. It was almost Scary to read because of the fact that it underlines the difference between people and their personalities. I unfortunately and yet inevitably already knew to some extent I had narcissistic traits. fortunately this read should give me the knowledge to stop and think about my actions before following through with a poor unbalanced decision. I feel the correlation between the nature/nurture and what your born with play a big role into your personality. Another therapist I study, notes attachment theory as a premise as to why we do what we do as adults. That we develop these attachments as young as 1 year old and in many cases have literally no control over it. I'm hopeful that through gaining knowledge of mental health that I can re-wire myself into my best possible self. Big thanks to Bill and Tom. I'll be checking out your other books.

Spot on.

Brilliant book. One I wish I had read years ago, before I became single and entered the world of dating. The info presented in this book could have spared me a lot of unwanted conflict.

This book should be required reading.

Unfortunately, I found myself the target of Sociopaths too many times to count. I decided to buy this book in an effort to figure out why. This should be required reading for anyone that works with people. I learned that being sensitive, caring and vulnerable can make you a target but you don't have to be a victim. And any field can be rife with them, especially the caring professions.

Clear and Concise

Excellent discussion of the personalities and the characteristics that make a clear case for walking away. My family has had someone through marriage for 17 years and it has caused such heartache for us and for the children. There seems to be no solution.

Interesting and quick read

I am interested in personality, psychology and dynamics. Though this book is informative regarding all of this, it guides the reader to avoid these personalities, which I don’t agree with or find possible. People deserve community regardless of their genetic makeup, and what this book could be helpful with is being aware of those personalities that are more challenging and arming the reader with the knowledge of how to maintain healthy boundaries.
