Story
Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

I carry a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.”

I have a weakness for Quincy Harker
At first glance and after the first few minutes of listening I thought this series was going to be very similar in nature to the Sandman Slim series. Well, really the only thing similar here was the voice choice of the narrator James Foster.
Quincy Harker is the nephew of Count Dracula, yes, the Count Dracula. Half vampire himself and has been alive for almost two centuries. In this time he has taken up the profession of demon hunter. Because of his lineage Harker has special abilities; such as super strength and speed, an aptitude with magic, a sharp mind and remarkable talent for pissing off the cops.
Raising Hell – Gives a great introduction to Harker and other interesting characters. We are introduced to Harker while he is performing a home exorcism. This leads him to a college fraternity and ultimately to a very powerful black magic sorcerer. That’s all you get from me about the plot. Because it is so short anything more would be a spoiler.
Straight to Hell – Now Harker works for the Department of Homeland Security Paranormal Division alongside his former nemesis, detective…. Not sure how this came about but very fitting indeed. Now Harker has a team of professional behind him and the backing of the government for jurisdiction. The only problem is now he has to take orders from someone.
Hell on Heels – In this installment, there is a new, err, old vampire in Quincy’s town. Uncle Luke will not stand for this. Especially because this vampire in town is a Renfield and a former servant who has found a way to become immortal. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a new vampire hunter in town too. The fight scenes are very well choreographed.
Hell Freezes Over – Harker has faced a variety of different foes in the previous stories, so I couldn’t think of what could possibly be next. Let me just say this. Somebody makes a deal with a devil and there are not any winners and angels have their own issues.
Hartness has discovered that no matter how short a book or novella is, the characters matter dearly. If the characters are not interesting and dynamic. Most people will stop caring about their well-being and therefore stop listening or reading a story. Along with a semi unique story-line. That is captivating enough to keep readers/listeners guessing.
I will be the first to admit that I have a weakness for protagonists that are belligerent and have a smart a*s attitude with dialog that is full of one liners. Made me laugh out loud several times. Like a cross between Joe Ledger and Michael Talbot.
This has to be one of James Foster’s most dynamic performances ever! Somehow making his regular super calm and soft spoken voice into a raspy, gravely treat for the ears, for Harker. While switching back to several characterizations with his normal voice. Keeping them all distinct and easily identifiable. Clearly making Foster a great choice for this series.
James Foster has made Harker his. Foster is Harker. Plain and simple. He has changed his “normal” storytelling voice into something that almost doesn’t sound like him. Continuing to refine his gravely undertones. Coming up with entertaining voices for the demons and such. I really don’t think that anyone else could do better. And if it wasn’t Foster telling the story it wouldn’t be Quincy Harker.

Amazing
Did not know this book would be so good he's the closes thing to Dresden I've heard so far can't wait to get the next book the only problem I have is that I wish it wasn't in so many small pieces but it makes for more action and is not drawn out like some books on the plus side you don't have to deal with unecessary plot twist and long drawn out monologue otherwise worth the credit can't wait to get the rest

Funny and fun
Hartness captures a spirit of humor and charm with characters that both attract and repel simultaneously. My personal dislike for gratuitous obscenity notwithstanding, generally I recommend this author and his Year One collection to all enthusiasts of good reads that you cannot put down.

Dracula legend continues in spectacular fashion
Wonderfully written and read. I already have the last two novellas but was very excited to fill in the back story with the 1st two. Great characters, great plot twists, good blend of modern, magic, legend, battle and blood. Holier than God
I knew the main character of this book was going to be insufferable but I was hoping that he was going to be insufferable in a fun way. I like arrogant, rough around the edges characters. I was yearning for a Felix Castor or a Harry Dresden. What makes them work is that they have all these unlikable qualities that make them imperfect but they have something relatable going for them too.
Despite my love for Dracula, the Harkers, and my absolute adoration of the name Quincy, I could not find a redeeming quality in Quincy Harker. He's arrogant, dismissive, reckless, holier than thou, holier than God, "scarier" than satan, completely unsympathetic, and a murderer.... and that's just in the first three chapters. I was not given a single reason to want to stick around and see if he succeeds. It's like if you mashed together the "cool, bad boy" tropes from Constantine, The Dresden Files, and Buffy the Vampire slayer and added a dismissive hand wave towards some 2000s version of Van Helsing or Dracula, with none of the quirks that make those stories interesting and thriving.
I DNF-ed this and I will not be revisiting it. I'm terribly disappointed because I really wanted to like Quincy.

Funny as hell!!!
In all honesty I don't know what to say about this to do it justice! Every time I sat down to write a review all that came to mind was amazing, hilarious, addictive and something that everyone should read!!!
Year one contains the first four Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter novellas and I was so glad they were all put into one volume.
Basically Raising Hell introduces us to Harker. He is Dracula's nephew and hunts demons. This one sees him doing an exorcism and hunting down the people responsible.
Straight to Hell sees Harker having to actually work with others! Something he isn't good at ;) This one sees him trying to stop the end of days!
Hell on Heels sees an old foe of Draculas coming back. When the original Renfield kidnaps the current Renfield to lure Harker and his Uncle Luke (Dracula) out, Harker has to get help from his employers.
Hell Freezes Over sees Harker trying to figure out why loving fathers are butchering their families. It leads him to a church and to someone much more powerful than he has ever faced!
I could tell you that the plots were all fast paced, action packed, magic and demon filled and absolutely gripping. I could tell you that the characters were all extremely well written and engaging. None more so than the foul mouthed Harker!! I could tell you that the quips and one liners will make you snort, snigger and laugh out loud. I could tell you all this and more but all I'm going to say is go read it NOW!! This book is amazing and one I will recommend highly to everyone!
James Foster is one of those narrators that will constantly surprise you. Every book he has narrated that I have listened to has been a 5 star performance, because that's what he does, he performs! He doesn't just read the book, he makes the book pop! He consistently delivers a memorable listen and I urge everyone to try at least one book by him!
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*

Super great fun and mayhem!
As noted in publisher's blurb, this is a compilation of the first four Quincy Harker books. The plots are excellent, the characters are too much fun. Quincy cusses like most of the testosterone folk I know, but his guardian angel loves him anyway; his partner (Detective Bex Flynn) rolls her eyes at his cluelessness; Uncle Luke (aka Vlad Dracula) has his back; and the ex-Marine from Homeland Security, Paranormal Division, gives him credentials. There are lots of snarks, puns, and gawd-awful jokes and comparisons. But not gratuitous erotica. Guaranteed to have you snurfling and cackling out loud despite the blood, gore, and sound effects.
James Foster is not only the voice of Quincy, but gives a remarkable performance with all of the other characters--and this is no mean feat! So get your exercise gear on or get on the bus/subway/train and enjoy the hyperactivity!

5 stars all around
This book was provided to me for free for Ann honest and unbiased review.
It takes a lot for me to give 5 stars all around but this book deserves it! I didn't realize until recently that I already loved Hartness' books because I have read "the black knight chronicles". This book from Harker to all the other characters and his one liners and the narration equal a 5 star review. Totally worth a credit for this book. There's a lot I can say about this book but it was all said above by another reviewer and I don't feel like having you re read the same review.
Happy Reading/Listening!!!
