Publisher's summary

The country is in turmoil. With the capital city occupied, half a million refugees are on the march, looking for safety on the frontier, accompanied by Lady Flint's soldiers. But escaping war is never easy, and soon the battle may find them, whether they are prepared or not.

Back in the capital, Michel Bravis smuggles even more refugees out of the city. But internal forces are working against him. With enemies on all sides, Michel may be forced to find help with the very occupiers he's trying to undermine.

Meanwhile, Ben Styke is building his own army. He and his mad lancers are gathering every able body they can find and searching for an ancient artifact that may have the power to turn the tides of war in their favor. But what they find may not be what they're looking for.

middle book in a trilogy

McClellan's writing keeps getting better but this book was predictable and mostly filler. the last 20% was great

Fantastic!

Book 1 in this series had a really slow start. Took me 7 hours or so to get to an interesting part in the book. Once the first novel got interesting, the awesome writing and plot that was felt from the Powder Mage Trilogy came through. Parts of this book surpass the previous trilogy.

Epic is all I can say. There are few series that I'll re-read. This is definitely one. Falls in the category of Kigkiller and Stormlight Archive for me.

Purely excellent!

2nd Book better than 1st one as the story grows

I like the series so far,the first book dragged on for quite a while but eventually the story starts rolling.I liked the plot twists. This not a great series but a very well done good series.I have been burning through them. Listening during my commutes and lunchtimes.

Can't get enough

I haven't had a series hold my attention like this since Sandersons stormlight series. I can't wait for the next book. Christian Rodska has the perfect gritty voice for these books. Everybody has a very unique voice, but they sound exactly how I would picture people that would be around smoke and gunpowder all the time. The story is absolutely fascinating. There's so much depth and layers to everyone and everything that is happening. There's almost never a dull moment, even for the characters that have menial tasks to accomplish. Next book please!

Another Amazing Book

I am happy I stumbled across Brian McCallum. these books have turned out to be amazing across-the-board. I enjoy the unique style and flavor of the magic system. I enjoy the style of the setting, the idea of the world that's growing around it and I really enjoy the characters especially Ben in particular.

Engageing

I cannot describe this second book in this series. Captivating , spellbinding action, unbelievable adventure and all tied together in a thrilling story of a marvelous world of unusual magic with the talent of Brian McClellan and Christian Rodska. I was drown into this series completely. I can not recommend this enough as I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying and being amazed.

A great time but more questions

More charges, more detonations, more scheming, more politics, and more character development. We get great character moments from the entire cast, their pasts are referenced the present is examined, and the future plotted. This does what a sequel should, and I thoroughly enjoyed it except for ONE thing.

More on that later, part of what keeps me coming back is Rodska. His delivery of the brutal, the pain of a character, and the moments of vulnerability are all fantastic.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

We still know absolutely PIT ALL about blood magic. Well let me clarify we know some of the things it CAN do, but we don't know HOW! And if the author wasn't so damn good at keeping me hooked with the conflicts, relationships, and twists that the cast goes through, I would have abandoned the series. Blood Magic or Blood Sorcery permeates the risks, consequences, and abilities of characters and plot, but we still don't know the details. It is damn frustrating to have it be so commonplace but so damn elusive as well. The Mad Lancers are going to Dynize in the next book. I swear by Krezemir's dead body that if we don't get a microscope view of Blood Sorcery I'll delete them from my shelf. Or at the very least be sorely tempted to do so.

Much better then the last

I really like the powered mage series, but the first book sins of empire I think had a rough go. It had a lot to set up and a spy story to tell that made it tough to keep straight at times.

I’m glad I grabbed this book, I think it found it’s legs and got moving in the direction it wanted. Looking forward to book three.

I could barely brake from listening

Having thoroughly enjoyed Book 1 of this series, I was surprised to find Book 2 had been released almost a year back and somehow missed it? Then, I became excited. After being away for 2 years, it took me a few chapters to recall the key players and what their story arcs had been. However, after sticking with it, all pf the previous book's elements fell into place and I was rewarded with the continued unfolding of this very unique fantasy adventure.

Brian McClellan's writing talents are excellent throughout but I particularly enjoyed how he split the tale into several MCs, each with their own interesting story arc yet all interconnected. Christian Rodska's narration performance is perfect for this type of fantasy novel.

If you haven't read book 1, I would highly advise it since there's a lot of backstory in it that book 2 assumes the listener is aware of, it's well worth the credit and while you're at it, spend another credit to pick up this book but I fell obligated to warn the reader that you will not feel well-rested until a few days after finishing binge-listening to them.
