Publisher's summary

Wizard scouts are the elite, deep-recon forces of the Intergalactic Empire. They are a mix of technology and magic-like abilities.

Richard, a cadet at the Intergalactic Wizard Scout Academy, is on assignment to retrieve a defecting scientist on a planet deep behind enemy lines. In theory, it should be a simple in-and-out mission. But as Richard learned long ago, nothing is ever simple. With a deadly Crosioian scout hot on his trail, Richard soon finds himself stuck with a couple of super-genius children who may hold a secret that could mean the salvation or destruction of three galaxies. Between dodging plasma rounds from heavily-armored Crosioian soldiers to battling werewolves, ogres, magic users, and deadly dimension-shifting cats the size of lions, Richard soon finds himself far outside his original mission parameters.

Even with the help of his battle computer, Nickelo, the odds of Richard completing his mission and getting the children safely home is low. Add in the interference of the mysterious entity known as 'the One' along with an all too suave master demon, and the odds of survival decreases even more rapidly. Will Richard's wizard scout training prevail, or is he doomed to fail? His only hope may well be to find allies in the most unlikely of places. Of course, a liberal sprinkling of luck wouldn't hurt either.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Even tho Wizard Cadet, and Wizard Defiant, are the first of this different trend of combining sorcery, magic, FTL, and self healing suits of armor, I was engrossed. Perhaps it was the military type action blended with pools of power and plasma weapons, or maybe it was the characters who were believable and well fleshed out in linear planes, Guy Williams did an admirable job in his rendition of new author Rodney Hartman text. Not exactly my cup of tea but I'm glad I explored with these wizards.

A perfect sequel

Continuing the journey with Rick and Nic as they are once again thrust into some unenviable situations. As the plot deepens and more of the curtain is pulled back, there are an equal number of new questions. I find it hard to stop listening whenever I hit play with this series.

Great book, butt is Nick Stewie from family guy?

love the series so far, but REALLY loved it once I realized the voice for the battle computer is basically Stewie from family guy
every time he talks I just picture there being a little command center in the helmet Nd stewie sitting there doing his thing!

fun and fulfilling read

I have enjoyed this series so far. An interesting mix of sci-fi and dungeon crawl styles, mixing technology and magic in an interesting and new way. A fun read worth the time to listen.

Escort Missions Suck

Overall I'm rather pleased at how the character development is going in this series, though this installment in particular was rather hard to start, as the characters flaws were thrust into the forefront with very few of his redeeming qualities to counteract.
However the series kept my interest, and the book was quite an interesting read. The narrator in particular is very talented, and I enjoy his part in the story telling.
I don't think anybody's fond of escort missions, and the beginning of the story is very much the epitome of a bad escort mission. the characters involved thankfully go through plenty of character development themselves, and I believe their interactions with Richard ultimately help him become a better person.

Ender's shadow w/ bob the skull

Fun blending of tech, wizardry, and space opera. Refreshingly unique magic/power system. I took a chance (first listen of both author and narrator) and was rewarded. I will be finishing the series at an alarming rate.
