Publisher's Summary

The Custodian Guard have stood watch over the Emperor's Palace on Terra since the foundation of the Imperium. Charged with protecting the Master of Mankind from all threats, within and without, their fearsome resolve is renowned throughout the galaxy, and their golden armour is the last thing that a would-be assassin or saboteur will ever see.

Alongside the Null-maidens of the Sisters of Silence, who are anathema to psykers and sorcerers alike, there is no threat to the Golden Throne that they alone cannot vanquish...until now.

Amazing work!

If I could I would have stood up and given Chris Wraight and the narrators a standing ovation. Absolutely brilliant in all fronts. I'm starting it ver immediately and I'm sure I'll pick up tons of things I missed.

Enjoyable from start to finish

Loved this story, it has a good cross between narrative and bolter open. I would suggest this to anyone wanting to know more of how Custodes and Null Maidens think.

Might be confusing for folks new to W40k lore

As for the performance and the story it is a lot of fun with intrigue and epic battles. What I think might be confusing is the significance of events in the story that have been building for years in the lore. I'd compare it to watching the season finale of a long and complex series. Why is this reveal or that turn of events blowing people's minds in the story? Not saying new folks should not listen or wouldn't enjoy it but I think it would be more enjoyable to check out some other stories earlier like the Eisenhorn series to help build up and make the context of this story a little more satisfying. For long-term fans of the lore this is pretty freaking epic IMO.

Great to see Black Library on audible!

I liked the story more than I expected (didn’t know what to expect though). Chris Wraight is one of my favorite BL authors- & I think his writing helped carry the book. The characters have depth to them, but the action sequences are well written & not confusing.

I know a fair amount of the story that led up to this setting- so I can’t recommend just blindly diving in.

Great history of second battle of Terra.

Great story but readers should have a working knowledge of 40k history prior to diving in.

Another in a long line...

Nothing beyond nitty-picky things I would’ve changed or added. Marvelous plot and execution! This is 40k for me, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

An excellent benchmark in Warhammer 40,000 lore!

Chris Wraight weaves a wonderful tapestry of details, transporting the listener to the dark and complex world of Terra in the 41st Millennium. This tale expands and explores the unique events

Overall a good read

It starts a bit slow but was overall a very good book. I liked Valerion and felt that it was nice to hear a story from a Custodian POW.

Enthralling

I was hooked from start to end with everything being told. The inclusion of multiple points of view with different voice actors adding an even further depth to each characters views was a very nice touch.

A brilliant read.

A brilliant insight into life on Terra. Varied angles on the the same events that rocked the throne world. some of the most interesting characters in the 40k universe.

really good SciFi

worth a listening to by 40k players and SciFi fans alike. Some never before explored areas of Imperial terra and the labarynthine workings of it's politics, off set by battles of 10ft super-men.

Hooked from start to finish

The performance of the narrators perfectly capture the different perspectives of the three main protagonists and brings this excellent story to life.

Another great warhammer novel by Chris wraith that links up nicely with the master of mankind and the story arch of Robert guiliman returning to terra.
