Publisher's Summary

The Custodian Guard have stood watch over the Emperor's Palace on Terra since the foundation of the Imperium. Charged with protecting the Master of Mankind from all threats, within and without, their fearsome resolve is renowned throughout the galaxy, and their golden armour is the last thing that a would-be assassin or saboteur will ever see.

Alongside the Null-maidens of the Sisters of Silence, who are anathema to psykers and sorcerers alike, there is no threat to the Golden Throne that they alone cannot vanquish...until now.

Amazing work!

If I could I would have stood up and given Chris Wraight and the narrators a standing ovation. Absolutely brilliant in all fronts. I'm starting it ver immediately and I'm sure I'll pick up tons of things I missed.

Enjoyable from start to finish

Loved this story, it has a good cross between narrative and bolter open. I would suggest this to anyone wanting to know more of how Custodes and Null Maidens think.

Might be confusing for folks new to W40k lore

As for the performance and the story it is a lot of fun with intrigue and epic battles. What I think might be confusing is the significance of events in the story that have been building for years in the lore. I'd compare it to watching the season finale of a long and complex series. Why is this reveal or that turn of events blowing people's minds in the story? Not saying new folks should not listen or wouldn't enjoy it but I think it would be more enjoyable to check out some other stories earlier like the Eisenhorn series to help build up and make the context of this story a little more satisfying. For long-term fans of the lore this is pretty freaking epic IMO.

Great to see Black Library on audible!

I liked the story more than I expected (didn’t know what to expect though). Chris Wraight is one of my favorite BL authors- & I think his writing helped carry the book. The characters have depth to them, but the action sequences are well written & not confusing.

I know a fair amount of the story that led up to this setting- so I can’t recommend just blindly diving in.

great book, takes place chronilogically before dark imperium, I read them out of order but it doesn't matter too much.

Awesome Story, Great Performance, and Phenomenal Characters

I’ve had a love hate relationship with the black library, I first fell in love with the 40k lore after reading the ultramarine omnibus. Since then many of the books have been extremely hit or miss for me - I am very happy to report that this book falls squarely in the “hit” category.

The space marines and imperial guard have been written about extensively but two orders detailed in this book as well as the deep dive into the actual interworkings of the imperium’s government was incredibly interesting and compelling.

Every main character in this book is extremely well written and ‘human’ in a way that truly invests you as a reader. I never found myself groaning when the story shifted perspective, as I’ve found myself doing in other books in the genre.

The performance was well done, the voices matched extremely well to the personas. I especially appulad the use of a female to voice the female characters and wish more audiobooks would go this route as there is nothing that shatters the narrative for me quite like hearing a dude try to poorly mimic a women’s voice.

The story kept me glued to my phone and though I generally only listen to books during my commutes I found myself with headphones constantly in my ears just to find out what happened next.

All in all an excellent book and if you have even a cursory interest in 40k or the sci-fi esque genre it is definitely worth the read!

Enthralling

I was hooked from start to end with everything being told. The inclusion of multiple points of view with different voice actors adding an even further depth to each characters views was a very nice touch.

Outsanding

I honestly cannot recommend it enough, The voice actors are superb, the dialogue and depictions are incredible and easily one of my favourites, Each chapter it swaps to the perspective of another which is brilliant to convey the characters better but can sometimes be jarring with the swaps

really good SciFi

worth a listening to by 40k players and SciFi fans alike. Some never before explored areas of Imperial terra and the labarynthine workings of it's politics, off set by battles of 10ft super-men.

Exciting and interesting

Honestly one of the best 40k books in recent memory. Gives a great insight to the Custodes and sisters of silence.
