Publisher's Summary

The game world is at war, and the forests are on fire....

Newly promoted ranger Barcud provokes the anger of the evil city of Horrabia and rumours of war abound. In a race against time, Barcud must found a village at a strategic river crossing, level it, and defend it against the oncoming threat.

But the Rangers Guild can't fight a whole city on their own, and they must seek allies among the unwilling, the unreliable, and the wicked in order to survive.

A story set in a virtual reality MMO where PVP is universal and heavy griefing is allowed by the developers to make the stakes ever more real for players.

Elements of city building and strategic total war bring this conflict alive and force Barcud to the limits of his abilities as he faces loyalty, loss and likely destruction.

Set immediately after A Player in the Greenwood, war is now brewing between the evil city of Horrabia and the city of Vinab for Vinab's part in the humiliating raid by the Rangers Guild and their Vinab allies on Horrabia.

Horrabia is raising troops and preparing armies. The ranger Barcud is in the Forest of Nightmares picking poisons when he observes a meeting meant to be secret. He is sure that it is something to do with the impending war.

War in the Greenwood

I really enjoyed this book. it was fast moving and kept me interested. It was focused on city building and war strategy, There weren't a lot of stats, which I appreciate in an audiobook when I can't skim that part! I also appreciate the mix of male and female player characters.

Immersed in a fantasy world LitRPG style

Another great LitRPG story. This one focuses more on the player characters and leaves the NPC's in a more traditional background role where as most of the others elevated them to AI player level status. The focus is also on kingdom building and massive wars. Really enjoyable with some serious villains. Enjoy this well written and well narrated addition to the LitRPG world. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

Probably not for everyone

Haven't read any of these LitRPGs before. I have some experience with RPG games but none with MMOs, so some of it does deal with a couple concepts I dont fully understand. I also found the long skill lists which are read a couple times too long and tedious. Someone without any familiarity might feel in a bit over their head.

But overall the book is a lot of fun and an interesting perspective from the typical fantasy novels.
The narrator was also clear and suited to the story.

Even though I am over 50, I enjoyed this book. Deep diving in a virtual reality is a few years away, it can be great to dream. I received this audio book for free at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

Solid City Building and War Strategy LitRPG

When game developers allow a vicious gamer to return to The Greenwood, all hell breaks loose. Once banished for his brutal gaming practices, Attila is back and now rules the city of Horrabia. The forces of good in the city of Vinab and the Ranger's Guild in the Forest of Dreams set themselves against Horrabia and hatch a plan. Unable to act openly against Horrabia without provocation, they decide to build a new village near the edge of Horrabia's territory to draw them out. And they choose ranger Barcud to found the new village.

Tasked with building a village and a secret army to antagonize Horrabia, Barcud is initially interested only in revenge. After being the victim of level stripping, Barcud just wants to make the Horrabians pay. But after spending so much time watching his little city grow, Barcud is determined to save it.

I really enjoyed this LitRPG, it was fast moving and kept me interested. It was focused on city building and war strategy, with a side bit of questing. There weren't a lot of stats, which I appreciate in an audiobook when I can't skim that part! I also appreciate the mix of male and female player characters. The writing could get a little clunky, and there were some inconsistencies like in game time vs. real time that changed throughout the book. It wasn't enough to detract from the story though, and I really enjoyed the read. This was the first book I've read in the Greenwood Chronicles, and I plan on picking up A Player in the Greenwood, Barcud's origin story.

I liked the narration, David Loving performed evenly and not too dramatically. He read at a good pace and his narration immersed me in the book. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
