Not a bad Sci Fi book.

This military sf story was funny at times and dramatic at others. At times you wanted time to speed up and at others to slow down, but that is true of most things in life.

I developed a great love for the main character and was sad for all the trials she was put throw. But that made for a very good listen.

I can not wait to get the second in the series.

Action Fill Military Story

I enjoyed the storyline even after figuring out that the battle was that of "Rorke's Drift" set on a new world. I will read the next book in the series.

So much fun

It’s pulpy. It’s corny. It’s over the top. “Die hard” meets Miles Vorkosigan and starship troopers.

Dialogue is fun and story snappy and even though the main character is to ridiculously good at her job is still ok and fun.

Space Cowpunching w Lots of Dust

Almost the Alamo. Riproaring bathos at it's best. Jim and crew, eat Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr's dust. Top rank penney dreadful fiction. Loved it. Narrator the right voice, pace, emphasis to carry the story through to a fistfight finish.

The lack of anything standing out

Typical military space conflict with no original thought. But as far as that goes, it was a good story and told well.

wonderful audio performance

There are seven species in this book that the author took the time to flush out. the audio reader is just as good in giving them each a separate identity with her voice. Tanya Huff is a remarkable writer who integrates military history with some wonderful characters. I've never been thrilled where this series went in the later books but this book by itself is one of her most thrilling reads. I appreciate that the audio reader made it just as good to listen to as it was to read when I first discovered it 20 years ago.

I like this book.

Have you listened to any of Marguerite Gavin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Marguerite Gavin's performances. I found this book/ series because of her.

Any additional comments?

Strong narration saves a middling story

This is a reasonably good story with a strong narrator but also in need of some serious editing. As a writer and editor, I have generally found it easier to shut off my editing brain with an audiobook and just enjoy the story. In the case of Valor's Choice, some issues with the writing itself were distracting enough to pull me out of the story.

Overall, this is a serviceable military science fiction with a few memorable characters-made more so by the narrator-and a lot of interchangeable warm bodies. If you like a military story, you'll probably like this one. If you prefer characters with some depth and more complexities, you'll be disappointed. For a beer-and-pretzels kind of book, it's just fine.

Decent Story that history buffs will recognize

This was a fairly well written book, unlike most space opera/Space Marine books Huff makes use of new races and they are unique. It was a risk and I appreciated it. The relationship between NCO and young officer was certainly recognizable, as was the banter between soldiers even of such different cultures. What was even more recognizable was the battle. The first thing that hit me both in situation, geography and even the layout of the final battle encampment was that this was basically a futuristic re-write of the 1879 Battle of Rorke's Drift between the British Army and the Zulu Nation, even down to the loud challenges and chants. The narration was solid.
