Publisher's summary

Book Three by international writing phenomenon David Weber. Two young settlers on a pioneer planet seeks to stop a war and to save the intelligent alien treecats from exploitation by unscrupulous humans.

The fires are out, but the trouble’s just beginning for the treecats.

On pioneer planet Sphinx, ruined lands and the approach of winter force the now Landless Clan to seek new territory. They have one big problem - there’s nowhere to go. Worse, their efforts to find a new home awaken the enmity of the closest treecat clan - a stronger group who’s not giving up a single branch without a fight.

Stephanie Harrington, the treecats’ greatest advocate, is off to Manticore for extensive training - and up to her ears in challenges there. That leaves only Stephanie’s best friends, Jessica and Anders, to save the treecats from themselves. And now a group of xenoanthropologists is once again after the great secret of the treecats - that they are intelligent, empathic telepaths - and their agenda will lead to nothing less that treecat exploitation.

Finally, Jessica and Anders face problems of their own, including their growing attraction to each other. It is an attraction that seems a betrayal of Stephanie Harrington, the best friend either of them have ever had.

Third 'chapter' of "Tree cats' meet "Humans"

Once again, the kids of Sphinx come to the salvation of TreeCats who are condemned to death by loss of their natural nesting area due to the fires discussed in the second book.

And, once again, theres a great deal of "Hurry Lassie..Timmy's in the well" as the treeCats try to make Humans understand what is needed, though the human 'younglings' are getting better at understanding what the Tree Cats want them to do.

The wars in the title is a brief fight between 2 clans of tree cats-one established in a nesting area and one who is looking for a home or just wanting to pass thru the settled Tree Cats grazing area. For the younger listener it isn't as gory as the first battle in the series in book one, between Tree Cat & Human vs. Hexa Puma/Death Fang. Sadly that episode upset my 8 year old grand daughter-she loves animals, including the hexapuma!

This last novel in the series finds main protagonist, Stephanie, off Sphinx attending classes in a major city as she works towards becoming a Forest Ranger on her home planet.

There are the usual cardboard cut out bad guys, the teens are mostly the kind you'e want your daughter to meet and date..polite, articulate and intelligent...where are they in real life?

All in all, a grand finale to the 3 prequil Honorverse books aimed at the pre-teen/Y/A audience.

Still there are questions left unanswered in this book which is a shame. A better ending might have been welcome..or perhaps there is another book in the works???

Apparently, if you're a fan of Weber this is a must read...I'm not..I was simply looking for Young audience books for my grand daughter and wound up enjoying this Sci-Fi lite series.

I suggest the listener take this for the audience that it's aimed at and not expect the level of sophistication and character development that might be found in other Weber books. It's not really meant for the adult audience, even though I, as a 70 year old, found it quite fun to listen to. Reminded me of John Scalzi's Fuzzy World or Robt. Heinleins iconic "Red Planet Mars" what with the first contact theme..except here, the protagonist begins as a slightly bratty 11 year old.

I enjoyed it-my grand daughter is enjoying the first book now--thats a pretty broad difference in tastes..62 years between us and we like the same book!

The land lost clan

This is the third book in the Stephanie Harrington series and it is advisable to read them it orders. This book takes place after the forest fires of book two. Stephanie and Karl are off to Manticore to take the course required for Forest Rangers. Special arrangements had to be made so Lionheart, her treecat, could travel and stay with Stephanie. Meanwhile back on Sphinx Jessica with her treecat Dirt Grubber and Anders discover a clan of treecats who is displaced when the fires destroyed their home area. They are clashing with another clan who has had some of their lands destroyed by fire and if the other clan comes to stay in their lands there will not be enough food to support them all through the winter. There apparently is one treecat who is mentally challenge to cope and attacks the Land Lost Clan. Jessica and Ander help with first aid and food and take one badly injured treecat to physician Scot who treats him. There is a lot of information about the treecats in this story as well as some teenage romance. The book also sets up for the next book with problems with a foundation that has bought a lot of land on Sphinx. This book is aim at YA market but adults will like it also. As a fan of the Honor Harrington series I read anything Weber writes about the Harrington world. Kristine Hvam does a good job narrating the book.

Leaves me wanting more...

The Treecat interactions with each other are a big part of what this book is about. I don't know if there will be more in this series but I want more...That said, a bit too much time is spent on Stephanie and Anders and their relationship. All in all a good book.

Solid YA Novel

I recently finished reading Treecat Wars, third book in the YA series Star Kingdom. The series is set in the Honorverse, a century or two before most of the tales told in the Honor Harrington novels.
This particular novel is focused on the early relationship between humans and treecats, before everyone accepted them as a sentient species.
The recent fires on the planet Sphinx have left the resources to few for all treecats in a particular area to survive and, if it cannot be prevented a war will ensue among the treecat clans.
The local teens who are bonded to treecats are doing their best to stop this tragedy, but are hampered in their efforts by those who would see the treecats destroyed rather than suffer a loss in the value of their land holdings on Sphinx.
Conclusion: This is an excellent YA sci-fi book, with a coming of age tale woven into it as well. I would recommend this to any teenager, anyone who likes cats, or anyone that is a fan of the Honorverse. It's well written and easily enjoyed.

Treecat Wars!

What did you love best about Treecat Wars?

I love everything about this story, and it was a great conclusion to the story of the treecats.

What other book might you compare Treecat Wars to and why?

The Honor Harrington series, because these are some of the stories, that kinda get referenced to but they get there own focus here.

Have you listened to any of Khristine Hvam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they are all great.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Treecat Wars have begun.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended to fans of David Weber.

Viewpoints

Viewpoints of all major and minor characters moved the story along smoothly. Narration was entertaining and did not distract to the storyline.
