Publisher's summary

American science fiction author Philip K. Dick published 44 novels and over 100 short stories. Ten popular films based on his works have been produced including Blade Runner and Total Recall. He explored sociological, political and metaphysical themes in his works.

Time Pawn first appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories in June ,1954. Under pressure from his publishers, Dick expanded the story into a full length novel - Doctor Futurity. The original is an excellent story but most critics agree that the expanded version was not a success.

Here then, as far as can be determined from extensive research, is the first re-publication of the original gem of a novella, filled with the excitement, excellent pacing, and food for thought one can expect from a Philip K. Dick work.

Minor updates and alterations have been made to the text so as not to interrupt the flow and believability of the story. Technolgical and otherwise distracting references - such as feeding tape into a computer - have been updated. The plot and characters remain unchanged.

Worst "Professional" Narration Ever

I can tolerate mediocre narration for a good story. And I wanted to listen to this one. Seemed as though there were at least some interesting ideas going on. (And I'm a huge PKD fan.) But I couldn't finish it. The narration was among the worst I've ever heard. It sounded like what a good narrator might use for a robotic voice. Not that it was entirely monotone, but even the vocal flares seemed to be programmed-in and not always at the most appropriate time. It's as if the narrator was voicing the story without actually paying any attention to the content.

Apparently some had a different view of the narration. Just be sure and listen to the sample before you buy, as I should have. It gives a representative sample.

Ignore my rating for the story. I couldn't get far enough into it (without going mad!) to make an evaluation there.

Great book

Where does Time Pawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best.

What about Jim Roberts’s performance did you like?

Very good narration.

Any additional comments?

I am a big fan of Philp K. Dick. However, one of the few books of his I did not like was Dr. Futurity. Now I see why. It's a "padded" version of this original with lots of stuff thrown in that gives it a rambling effect. This is a much tighter and better story. Glad I came across it.

Not very good.

This was my least favorite of the three shorts by PKD I have read.

It felt contrived, and some of the plot lines were weak and unexplained. Just not very good.
