Publisher's Summary

For those discovering the epic best-selling Dark Tower series for the first time—and for its legions of dedicated fans—here is an immensely satisfying stand-alone novel and perfect introduction to the series.

Beginning in 1974, gaining momentum in the 1980s and coming to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004, the Dark Tower epic fantasy saga stands as Stephen King’s most beguiling achievement. It has been the basis for a long-running Marvel comic series.

Now, with The Wind Through the Keyhole, King has returned to the rich landscape of Mid-World. This story within a story within a story finds Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, in his early days during the guilt-ridden year following his mother’s death. Sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a "skin-man", Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, a brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast's most recent slaughter. Roland, himself only a teenager, calms the boy by reciting a story from the Book of Eld that his mother used to read to him at bedtime. "A person's never too old for stories," he says to Bill. "Man and boy, girl and woman, we live for them."

Sure to captivate the avid fans of the Dark Tower epic, this is an enchanting introduction to Roland’s world and the power of Stephen King’s storytelling magic.

    Story
"A pleasant visit with old friends"
Would you listen to The Wind Through the Keyhole again? Why?

Yes. I might.I've found the Dark Tower books to be a work worth going over a few times, partly for enjoyment, partly to study the craft of writing an enjoyable story. As a study of the Gunslinger's world, this story helps to round out a few details. But, personally, I found little in it to contribute to the major story arc of Roland's tale. It was certainly enjoyable. But, like a visit from an old friend ten years absent, it felt awkward. It was as if in our time apart, we (me, the reader, King, the author, as well as Roland's ka-tet) had each grown in our separate lives. And, coming together again, we were all forced to adjust and fit together differently than our usual accustomed places. It took some time to get used to King as a narrator. His performance is always a little caricatured when compared to the rich, nuanced performance George Guidall delivers for the majority of the rest of the series. All in all, I was glad to learn a bit more from Roland's world. But, maybe I was hoping for something else... a Gunslinger with a horn on his belt, for example...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Most of the story was about Tim. So, who else?

Would you listen to another book narrated by Stephen King?

Of course. I have. And, many times.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No, not at all.

    Story
"Mr. King is NOT a narrator and never should be"

Although Stephen King is one of my very favorite authors, someone needs to tell him that he should never, never, NEVER narrate one of his own books again, or any written material for that matter.

I adore the Gunslinger series (this is my second time reliving it), and this story is probably very good, but after a half hour of listening to Mr. Kings monotone voice with absolutely no differentiation between any of the characters' voices or inflections, I found I had totally lost the thread of the story and basically didn't even care what it was.

Since I really want to know this story and to become as immersed in it as I have with the rest of the series, I'm going to buy the book. I prefer the audio versions as it's difficult for me to find the time to sit down and read, but I'll have to make an exception this time.

    "Classic"
Where does The Wind Through the Keyhole rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

I love the gather around the campfire style of story telling that Stephen King is so good at. I truly believe that the dark tower series shows his abilities at their best. These characters are real to him and he brings them to life for us, too. The story within the story was seductive, distracting and a window into the world that we have only gotten glimpses of and in hind sight. It was fun to visit with the merry band of travelers again. They teach us that family is not only the people you are born to, but also the friends you choose to surround yourself with.

What did you like best about this story?

The details that it adds to the world that Roland drew the New Yorkers into

What about Stephen King???s performance did you like?

I was surprised that he did such a good job. I have listened to other performances of his in the past and was convinced that they characters would be out of his scope to vocalized, but was pleasantly surprised.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It took you through a range of reactions and emotions

    "Really good Story"
Would you listen to The Wind Through the Keyhole again? Why?

I'm not sure that I would. It was a really good story though and couldn't stop listening to it.

What other book might you compare The Wind Through the Keyhole to and why?

I'm not sure Stephen King definatly has his own style of fantasy.

    Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed myself while listening to this book and of course had to move on to the rest of Stephen King's Gunslinger series. So far I find it highly entertaining. It brings a lot of wonder to a book when things of our world are brought into a time and place that they don't but at the same time do fit into. Great Stuff!

"Couldn't wait for it to be over"
Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Stephen King?

Only if it wasn't narrated by him.

What other book might you compare The Wind Through the Keyhole to and why?

    Good Dark Tower story

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was terrible! Monotone. Most of the time you couldn't tell which character was speaking. He even mispronounced several words. One of the characters you could tell King was holding his nose to sound different. He has proven in the past, he is a terrible actor. Why he tried this is a mystery.

Stephen King is one of my favorite authors but he spoiled this book for me.

    Any additional comments?

Advice to King. Keep writing great novels but please don't try to act.

    "Shameless cash grab..."
What would have made The Wind Through the Keyhole better?

Stephen King should stick to writing. I'm sorry to say his narration was terrible! As an example, though I know he wrote it, I can't imagine he was saying his own character's last name remotely correctly. "Doo-chez-knee". brutal. This might have been forgivable is the story hadn't also been bland an pointless. It added absolutely nothing to the great story arc he had already created. He should have left the one book/series he has ever managed to write an ending for alone...

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Stephen King?

The previous narrator (I'm sorry I'm terrible with names!). Even though the previous narrator was a stand in for the gentle man who narrated the rest of the series (due to an unfortunate situation) he did a great job.

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Nope. Need to look into the audible refund program. This book was the cash grab that I've heard so many times Mr. King is famous for but that I had not really experienced until now.

    "Great Story!"
What made the experience of listening to The Wind Through the Keyhole the most enjoyable?

Once Roland begins to tell the tale of The Wind Through the Keyhole. Overall the book was great and it offered a little bit of Roland's history, how he felt about his mother and forgiveness.

I for one am a fan of Stephen King's narration. I happen to use the Audible app to listen to books on my phone and I set the narrator speed at 1.25, this might make it easier for those who are not fans of King's narration.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the tale of Tim Ross as well as a young Roland coming to grips with the murder of his mother and the chance for forgiveness.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I loved the story of Tim Ross and Roland's telling of the tale of The Wind Through the Keyhole.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This was a book I could have listened to in one sitting!! Both the Tim Ross and the young Roland were very enjoyable. I read the entire Dark Towers series and thought it was over, King telling Roland's earlier life makes me hopeful for more!

"A story within a story within a story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would definitely recommend this book. It is just plain enjoyable story telling and, despite what others may say, this is some of the best narration I have experienced.

What does Stephen King bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Stephen conveys the personality of his characters with great clarity through is voice work. A golden throated narrator does not always make the best storyteller.

"This is a tangent off of the DT series."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to a friend if they were interested in sci-fi fantasy. I think that if they hadn't read the Dark Tower series previously that this book may intrigue them to start.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Tim because of the courage he possessed and how he so related to being a Gunslinger.

What aspect of Stephen King’s performance would you have changed?

I LOVE the great stories Stephen King comes up with. Unfortunately, though I am not a fan of his reading. It really takes some work to get past his monotone, nasally voice. Sorry, Mr. King . . . you are truly wonderful at writing though!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I don't think there is a specific moment . . . it is all pretty great.

    Any additional comments?

Stephen King is pretty good at writing a story within a story within a story. I found myself so wrapped up in the inner story that I forgot of the outer ones. That is one of the things Stephen King is so great at . . . sucking you into a story that you forget about reality going on around you.

This is one of those books that is like watching a suspenseful movie or ball game where you are yelling at the television rooting for your team (or character).

I do have to say that I dove into this book hoping that it would satisfy my sorrow for the ending of the Dark Tower series, but it is really more of a tangent and you do get a little disappointment from that. However, once you get into the story that disappointment fades quickly.

"Good book - painful to listen to"
What made the experience of listening to The Wind Through the Keyhole the most enjoyable?

love his books, but as alot have said - listening to this was painful to the ears. At certain points I could picture him pinching his nose to create some of the voices.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wind Through the Keyhole?

Picked up pace as most King books do and liked the book inside a book inside a book aspect.

What didn’t you like about Stephen King’s performance?

his reading....stick to professional voice talent please!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

yes - took a few hours to get passed the disappointment in the reading.
