Publisher's summary

The dwarves have gone to battle, and they have been victorious. But outside the realm, dark forces are at work.

A secret army of Orcs, made immortal by the hidden powers of the Black Water, now marches towards Girdlegard, set to unleash its fury upon the kingdom. Sooner than they realize, Tungdil and his comrades will need to summon all their courage to do battle against this bloodthirsty horde.

The Orcs are not the only threat. An unspeakable new power is growing and threatens the very existence of the dwarves. But both enemies have forgotten one very important truth: A dwarf is never more dangerous than when total obliteration seems inevitable.

Re bought just to listen

I bought this series way back from barns and noble when it first came out. Pretty much the only serious book dedicated to the dwarven people. It's a fantastic listen and read. Buy it.

Not sure what to think

I really liked the first book. Generally speaking I usually find the second book in longer fantasy series to be better than the first. It’s got most of the world building out of the way. A lot of the course for the series has been set. In this case I am not sure that’s the case. This book felt a little like a step back. Most of the first 3/4 of the book was forgettable to me. I gave the story 4 stars because 3.5 isn’t a choice. The last quarter of the book was pretty good. The performance is not great. They changed narrator after the first book and the new one is not great. Little variation in characters and kind of a boring voice. I probably would have dropped this series if he had been narrator of the first book. I struggled through much of this book deciding whether I was going to continue the series. It’s rare that I give up on series of books once past the first. I am going to read book three and hope it raises the series where I would expect after a second book but this will be the last one I force myself through.

A good story

The narrative can be a bit rambling but I still recommend it for the overall story

The War of the Dwarves

This is such a great series. Tungdil and his companions didn't disappoint me. I was nervous after how much I loved the first book, this wouldn't be as good. I'm glad to be wrong. It is an excellent story and I loved it as much as I did the first.

Next Book Please

When I first started this series, I was skeptical as I had not experienced this world other than through Tolkiens words. As I read the first book I found myself getting sucked into the characters and the story. The follow up was even better. His character development and story telling is absolutely addicting. I loved it!!!!
