Publisher's summary

A timeless epic of the dawn of civilization.

In The Valley of Horses, Ayla, the unforgettable heroine of The Clan of the Cave Bear, sets out on her own odyssey of discovery away from the nurturing adoptive family and friends of the Clan. She is in search of others like herself and in search of love.

Sharing a hidden valley with a herd of steppe horses, Ayla finds a unique friendship with animals as vulnerable as herself and ingeniously discovers the complex skills needed to survive - skills no Clan member was ever able to master.

But none of her experiences prepares her for the emotional turmoil she feels when she rescues a young man - the first of the Others she has seen - from almost certain death.

Torn between her desire for human companionship and her fear of the unknown Others, she struggles against her deep attraction to the handsome Jondalar. It is Jondalar who teaches her the meaning of true friendship and love.

Empowering love story and self-love story

Especially in these times when people are thinking more about the empowerment of women (and attempts at disempowerment), this is a story about the Source of power that is available to all women.
I loved these books as a teenage girl and in my 20’s. I’m really enjoying revisiting them.

I do wish Sandra Burr read more slowly, though. That’s the only reason I’m not giving the book 5 stars across the board.

Great read/listen

It has all of the cultural and historical depth of the first book, with new elements of realistic fantasy. Human vs nature and Human communing with nature simultaneously. The "sexy-time" scenes are pretty vivid and surprising, tho they didn't detract from the story for the most part.

Revisit Valley of the Horses

I read this book years ago and was interested in listening to the audible version. It was very good and I enjoyed revisiting the prehistoric past. The author did a good job of fleshing out the characters and making their lives believable. I am a bit older and my tastes have changed since I first read the books. I also remember not finishing the Mammoth Hunters because I got bored with it. I don’t regret the credit and will stop at this one.

This narrator runs a wonderful story!

I read the Earths Children books many years ago and just loved them., so wanted to enjoy them in audio form as I walk for miles and listen while walking.
This narrator is just terrible. Primarily she races through the story , I'm a fast listener but I had to turn the speed down to 90% to even listen. She has very little emotion in her voice and all the characters sound alike... I was going to get the next book in the series because I wanted to follow Ayla and Jondalar but I read the reviews and decided not to download it. I will buy the paperback and read it myself.

LUV THIS SERIES

Wonderful story. I stumbled across this series when audible was offering a special on the first book in a select set of series. Thought I would give it a try since I had seen and loved the movie Clan Of The Cave Bear. Firstly ... I was surprised to find that it was a series. I fell in love with the "real Alya"! No comparison between the movie and the sieries. I immediately HAD TO HAVE all 5 books. So much was changed and even more was left out that I am still amazed. Well written and while the reader is on shaky ground with the first book ... she improves dramitaclly as she continues the series, finds her footing with it, and develops and makes distinct each character by book 5 ... adding to the charm of this wonderful story. So much so that I can not imagine anyone else reading it. I can't wait for the 6th book. Thank you audible for re-opening my love of the Clan and my interest in pre-history. Well worth listning to!
