Publisher's summary

Created in the Emperor's own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny - they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

Find out the deepest mysteries of the primarchs. Who is in control of Fulgrim's body - him, or a daemon? What happens when the Alpha Legion fights against itself? Just what secrets is the Lion keeping? And what could the tragic Ferrus Manus have done to prevent himself from becoming a head shorter?

Mixed bag

Four novellas centered around different primarchs. The first two are trash, the third average and the fourth excellent. Only recommended for dedicated fans of the series. Otherwise, borrow from a friend if possible.

Last Story Was Good

I found the first two stories disappointing. The last story was an Alpha Legion story and it was well done. As always, the narrators were exceptional.

solid read

very good book, worth reading, doesn't move the story along very much, so you can skip if you're trying to power read the series

Great voice, too many names.

A good story that is hard to follow as the amount of proper Nouns make it confusing at times.

Fun Stories

I always enjoy the shorter stories, but sometimes it’s hard to leave the main narrative for so long.

Can be skipped.

Four very different stories.

The first about Fulgrim is confusing and basically a retcon making it so that the demon that posses Fulgrim is the one in the painting even though the powers used by physical Fulgrim make no sense and the conversations between the two even more bizarre.

The second is centered around the Iron Hands and comes off as a load of rather obvious "symbolism" and has an extremely basic "lesson" learned at the end while also making the whole legion out to be more hateful towards humanity than the traitor legions.

The third story has the most leaps in logic and makes the Dark Angels out to be morons who somehow have no idea what a daemon is despite being neck deep in the Horus Heresy. The story has a lot of random stuff like navigators shooting eye lasers and three librarians in space controlling two different legions of space marines on a planet into a cease fire. It is alright but very grating at points.

The fourth and final story involved the Alpha Legion and is the best of the four by leaps and bounds. It is a shame that this one was not expanded to a full length novel. I struggle to say that this story makes the purchase worth it as the other three were downright awful.

The orators did an outstanding job as usual, it is just unfortunate they had to narrate these sorry excuses for short stories.

The final story sheds a lot of light on the Alpha legions motivations and holds some big implications for the overall story

Some of the stories are really engrossing, while others are dull and dont contribute much to the overall lore. overall 4 stars

I loved all of these stories, especially the Alpha Legion one serving as the encore!

Meh

I like these short novellas since they get the point across and can serve as smaller stepping stones, and answer certain questions. The Fulgrim story was one that answers a question I had since the original Fulgrim book, but I guess I just didn't like how it handled it. The final story was kicks ass.
