Publisher's Summary

Meet Shaman Bond, aka Eddie Drood, scion of the ancient Drood family. He is devoted to protecting humanity from the forces of darkness. Protected by the secret weapon received at birth by all members of the Drood family - a magical gold torc (i.e., a neck ring) that turns into a suit of nearly impervious golden armor - Eddie faces arcane dangers with healthy doses of wry self-confidence and sarcasm. Then the family matriarch sends him on a mission that turns out to be a deadly setup. Declared a rogue, Eddie teams up with short-tempered witch Molly Metcalf to find out why he's been betrayed.

    "Family freud"

My husband and I listened mainly at night at the story and we had to add minutes almost ever time to it because it became interesting or had to go back the next day! Maybe a little try for some people but we like it and looking more of this author and narrator

    "Consistency? Character voicing?"

It was a fun story. I wanted to know how it ended so I stuck with it. But it was a challenge because A) the author would repeatedly spend paragraphs explaining why something had to happen a certain way or couldn't be done a certain way because of some constraint of his universe then immediately break the rules so laboriously established (be intentionally vague here to avoid spoilers). B) the narrator's accents and were the worst I've heard on Audible. Especially the female characters.

    "New fresh urbin fantasy story"

The book was well written and original. It kept you thinking, and wanting more. The narrator kept the story going and was pretty good at his voices.

    "Overacted narration and underwhelming writing."

The plot line is a moden urban fantasy slash secret agent thriller but the narrator seemed to think he was reading Lord of the Rings.

The voice of his main charcter was modern and well done but his supporting role voices were awful: melodramatic and completely inappropriate for the modern dialogue. The scottish brogue and other accents were inconsistent and the females characters sounded like he was holding his nose. I had to speed it up to 115% to keep from giving up.

The plot and characters have potential but the dialogue was amature and action scenes were perfunctory. Character relationship development was hamfisted. Characters, particularly bad guys, did the classic "stand around gloating while spouting exposition". The excellent potential of the good guy/bad guy dichotomy was not realized. Thank you for not trying a sex scene.

At some points the weak dialogue and poor acting achieved critical mass and made me laugh out loud - the scene chewing was hilarious!

I did listen to the entire book, so I could in good conscience write a thoughtful review.
IMO this is first draft quality. The writer has good ideas but needs to do some more work to make this what it could be.

    "It's a style thing"

Well, for the first time since purchasing my Audible membership I really wish I had read the book instead of listening to it. The concepts and world building were interesting and fresh. The characters had a few laughs, I liked the story line well enough, but found it was dragged down by some repetitive moments, extra cheese and thin romance plotting.

And then there was the narrator. Many people will absolutely love the bouncy irreverent cadence, calling it fun and witty. I found it awkward and waaaay overdone. I will never touch this author's work again after experiencing that lilt. Few! Finished.

"Excellent narration, great story, and nice twist."

Admittedly, im a sucker for a good english accent. The story had some shocking scenarios and kept a reasonable pace. The action came frequently and had interesting points in between. Enjoy!

    "Old matriarchs one and all"

Story was good a little clunky compared to most Simon R. Green books I've read. I liked the narrator for male characters but Mr Blinder makes all of the females sound like fussy old ladies. It threw the whole book off for me.

"Fun book; reader was just okay."

I do love Simon Green & urban fantasy. The story was good. I will get the next book. My only real criticism was in the narration. The narrator sounded a bit older than most of the characters & with older characters he spoke very slowly. Not a deal breaker but not the best choice.

"Enjoyable new series with nods to the Nightside"
Would you listen to The Man with the Golden Torc again? Why?

Probably, I like to listen when I run and get through a lot of books that way. I like to reread/relisten.

What other book might you compare The Man with the Golden Torc to, and why?

There are many similarities to Simon R Green's other series, The Nightside, and like those books it take a theme, Bond-esque in this case, PI-noir for the Nightside books, and twists it to add a supernatural and Other universe to exist in. There are plenty of references and in jokes recognisable to any fantasy/scifi fan drawn from books and other sources, new and old.

What does Stuart Blinder bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A fantastic dry London accent brings the character to life

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Love the writing, kept me guessing as the tension built.

    "ups and downs"

thought the story was alright. it seemed a bit inconsistent, and perhaps tried to put too many ideas into a chapter - introducing new foes, and of species not common across fantasy lore, was a bit much
