"A Great Book From a Great Series"

I couldn't believe when I saw that this had been released. The previous book in the series (Relentless) was published barely a year ago. I downloaded this on a friday night and I was done listening to it by monday evening.

You need to get these books in order or this book will not make any sense. Here is the order:
    Dauntless
    Fearless
    Courageous
    Valiant
    Relentless
    Victorious.

Christian Rummel is probably the best reader I have ever heard. He switches characters so well that it's a pleasure to listen for the reader's skill as much as the author's.

I cannot recommend this serious enough.

    "Victorious"

Oh, how sad the series is over. I do hope he goes on to write about putting both the Alliance and the Syn-tic back together to fight the aliens. Christian Rummel did a great job narrating the series. Campbell did a great job with the space battle scenes and also with building the tension and suspense between the various people in the series. I am looking for more series by Jack Campbell. I feel as if an old friend has moved away.

"A great continuation to a great series."

I started this series as this book was released, so I was able to listen to all the books in the series. This one really ties things up nicely. Great action, espionage, and a little romance.
I can't wait for the next book in the series.

    "This is a great series"

The Lost Fleet is one of the most entertaining SF series I have ever read. I've now listened to the complete series 4 times. All I can say is that I've really enjoyed Mr Campbell's work. I would recommend to anyone who is looking to read this series is that you start from the beginning. Even though I know Victorious is suppose to be the last book in the series, I really hope that Mr Campbell re-exams this decision and continue with the more in this series. The possibilities are endless at the moment.

"The Perfect Ending, in that It Isn't One"

When this book hit Audible, I set aside studying for finals until I'd finished. It's funny in retrospect then that I dreaded this book's arrival. It meant the end of a series I'd come to love since I'd first discovered it on Audible some two years before. If you've made it through the first five, all I can say is, what are you waiting for? And if you haven't, do not under any circumstances start here; this is the payoff to a long journey, filled with tension, triumph, and sacrifice.

Luckily, this was not the end of the saga of the Alliance fleet, but rather the jumping off point for two spinoff series, one I happily revisit from time to time.

    "The fleet is finally found!"

    Originally posted at FanLit:

Victorious is the sixth and last book in Jack Campbell’s original LOST FLEET series. (If you haven’t read the previous books, you’ll want to read them before reading this review.)

Captain Black Jack Geary and the Alliance fleet have finally arrived, battered and bruised, to their home in the Alliance system and Geary’s feet touch ground for the first time in 100 years. Not surprisingly, the Alliance senate is leery of Geary (ugh, that rhyme!) and suspect that he may be planning a coup. But all he wants to do is deliver the ominous news from space about the aliens who’ve been driving the Syndic-Alliance war all this time. Surely they have bad intentions toward the human races they’ve been manipulating.

So, after only a brief respite, Captain Geary, Tanya Desjani, Victoria Rione, and many of the other officers of the Alliance fleet, head back out in space to end the war with the Syndics and then to deal with an alien race that they know almost nothing about. This time many of their crew are newbies who are ill-prepared for war and who don’t understand the new ways that Geary has brought to the military. (Or, I should say, the old ways that Geary has brought back to the military.) Geary can’t completely trust them, but he can’t afford to offend them either. There’s a sensitive balance.

Well, from the title of the book, we all know how it’s going to end, but the journey is what we’re interested in. How can Geary end the war? What are the aliens like and what do they want? Can he stop them? Is Michael Geary still alive, and if so does his survival depend on what Black Jack does? What about Victoria Rione’s missing husband? Will Geary and Tanya end up together? Will Geary be able to have a relationship with his grandniece? Some of these questions will be answered in Victorious, some I suspect are answered in the spin-off series, and some we may never know…

I’ll wrap up my review of the LOST FLEET series by summing up my main impressions. This is an engaging story with a great protagonist, a few likeable secondary characters (though they are not as interesting or as well fleshed out as Black Jack Geary is), an exciting but often repetitive plot that occasionally strays into unbelievable territory when our characters are able to anticipate the enemies’ plans, and a touch of appealing humor. It would have benefitted by having is length reduced by about a third. I slightly resent that I had to shell out money for six books when I feel like it should have been only four books long, but based on reviews at Amazon and Goodreads, most readers were happy to do so.

I read the audio version of THE LOST FLEET which was produced by Brilliance Audio and wonderfully narrated by Christian Rummel. One thing I have neglected to mention in my previous reviews are Jack Campbell’s (John G. Hemry’s) delightful introductions to the book. These are short information-filled pieces in which he may answer a question from a reader which gives us insight into some aspect of his creation of the story. Often he compares his created world with his experience or knowledge of the modern American military. For example, in the introduction to Victorious, he mentions that readers have asked why his spaceships don’t have back-up power generators and then goes on to explain how and why they’re often not included in current designs for military equipment. I enjoyed these little nuggets of information. If you’re going to read THE LOST FLEET, I highly recommend the audio version.

    "Great Series"

Overall excellent book with fairly decent narration. My only complaint would be the repetition the author uses on a regular basis.

    "Very nice"

Very nice series, good narration, interesting plot. I recommend this. The very end of the very last book (Victorious) felt a bit rushed but it was still good. I gave it only 3 stars because I wasn't happy with any of the female characters in the books. Dauntless' captain Tanya D. was increasingly unbelievable as a character, too perfect, too holier than thou, and at the end she was essentially continuously disrespecting her commanding officer by yelling at him, lecturing him, speaking to him with sarcasm, etc. I didn't quite understand why that was allowed. So, the female characters were a disappointment, hence -2 stars, but the male characters were fantastic and the plot was superb.

"My gosh you have to give this series a try!"

I often read others reviews on books I'm considering getting and one reviewer rated this series very well. He wasn't kidding! This has become one of my favorite sci-fi space based series easily! My only regret is that I don't see any others available on Audible yet. I am very much so hoping to see the others released soon!

    "Not what I hoped for."
    Any additional comments?

I was hoping for so much more in this 6th installment of John Geary's adventures. I'm sad to say that Jack Campbell phoned this one in. As I've said in my reviews of the past Lost Fleet novels the man can't write romance and should quit trying. The last 45 minutes was the audio equivalent of a root canal.

Know your limits, Jack! Stick to what you're good at, which is naval strategy and military mindsets.

There are some great moments in this book that occur when the story is moved forward and not the strange character development stuff. I can't stress enough how bad the forbidden romance nonsense is, how melodramatic and forced on the characters it feels. The characters dialogue doesn't even make sense in these contexts.

Christian Rummel does an outstanding job reading the material. His voice acting is second to none, and each character gets a unique voice.

I've already purchased the 1st 'Beyond the Frontier' novel, so I have reason to hope the story gets back on track. I really do love this series. When it's good it's awesome. I just get frustrated by the melodrama. I'm sure there's a lot of people who feel differently.
