Publisher's summary

Empires clash, and a fell power stakes its claim in the second in a new series from the New York Times best-selling author of the Raven's Shadow Trilogy.

For centuries the vast Ironship Trading Syndicate relied on drake blood - and the extraordinary powers it confers to those known as the Blood-blessed - to fuel and protect its empire. But now a fearsome power has arisen - a drake so mighty that the world will tremble before it.

Rogue Blood-blessed Claydon Torcreek, Syndicate agent Lizanne Lethridge, and ironship captain Corrick Hilemore embark upon perilous quests to chase down clues that offer faint hopes of salvation. As the world burns around them and the fires of revolution are ignited, these few are the last hope for the empire and for all of civilization.

Fantastic author, great story, unbearable narrator

Others have said it, the switch to Steve West makes this almost unbearable from the very beginning. Steven Brands delivery had been perfect for the tone of the books. I couldn't believe the first time I heard the whiny American surfer-boy voice West uses for Clay.
For being such an amazing story, I was surprised at how I can barely hang in there listening to Wests screeching and whining voices. Hes obviously a great talent, but not suited to this series.
Overall very disappointed. Hopefully Brand returns for book 3. I cant take another 20+ hrs of West.
I 5 starred Overall and Story because I'd like Anthony Ryan to be recognized for the amazing author that he is, but West has got to go to keep the momentum for the series.

Miss Steven Brand

I like the story and the series so far. I got use to Steven West, but I really miss Steven Brand. He was one of the reasons I tried this series. I hope he returns for next book.

Terrible Narration

Did you enjoy the first book? Then get ready to be dissapointed because they switched narrators for this one and he is terrible.

What happened to Steven Brand!!!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am reluctantly recommending the book because I love the story line, but I am sorely disappointed that the narrator has changed. I am ordering the hard copy since Steve West is sucking all the enjoyment out of listening to the book.

A good continuation of the series

If you could sum up The Legion of Flame in three words, what would they be?

I'm not going to do that.

It's still the 3 main characters from the first book, with an addition of one other perspective which really is telling towards the story and the point of view of the 'other side'

Lizanne's story line drags a little bit because it's a lot more political than the rest, which makes sense for her, but for me it was like OK GET TO THE POINT. Luckily by the end, they did.
Clay and Hilemoore(I don't know if this is how you spell it, since I just listened to it) have grown in their own ways.
The new character is someone we know but his side of the story and his direction is very interesting.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Legion of Flame?

uhhh

SPOILER***

When they find ''her'' and figure out where the white comes from.

Which character – as performed by Steve West – was your favorite?

Hilemoore. He sounds as he should.

Now. He is getting A LOT of hate here in the reviews because of the changed narrator. Now I will say this, the previous narrator is a very good narrator, but the issue with him is that he has no character depth. All his characters sounded the exact same, there was no diversity, there wasn't a difference between any of the males, any of the dialects, and the women sounded exactly like the other women and wasn't even trying very hard.
He would be excellent as a single or maybe 2 POV book, but not in one that has multiple.
Now Steve West,
He has a different voice for everyone, a different dialect depending where that character is from, and the Corventines(sp?) all sounded similar

So for people who are hating on Steve West, think again- he is a very good narrator, so is Steven Brand..but honestly he just wasn't up to snuff for this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to it for many hours at once but in no way could listen to it in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Give this book a go, if you haven't listened to the first book, please do for a lot of the things will not make sense.
Don't let the old narrator or new narrator discourage you- they are both VERY GOOD narrators, and the story really is worth the switch of voices.

Can't wait for the 3rd book, I hope it comes out in a year instead of 5 years later or something

great story, voices a bit over acted

the story was great.. Ryan is one my favorite story tellers. the performance was mostly good, but some of the voices were over done & distracted from the words.

Start to finish

I’m not sure what causes the narrator to sometimes change in “Series” and I would always prefer they remain the same. That said I believe both these narrators did a fine job. I’m looking forward to the final book in the trilogy.

great story line.

I loved the raven's shadow storyline, but this series is better! Pov stories all have solid performance.
