Publisher's summary

Sandman Slim returns in this stunning, high-octane ninth thriller in the series, filled with the intense, kick-ass action and inventive fantasy that are the hallmarks of New York Times best-selling author Richard Kadrey.

Sandman Slim has been to Heaven and Hell and many places in between, but now he finds himself in an unknown land: the far, far edge of the Tenebrae, the desolate home of the lost dead. Making his way inland with nothing but his unerring instinct for trouble to guide him, he collides with a caravan of the damned on a mysterious crusade, led by the ruthless Magistrate. Alone and with no clue how to get back home, he throws in with this brutal bunch made up of human souls, Hellion deserters, rogue angels - and Father Traven.

Slim didn't land in Tenebrae by chance. His little stunt of trying to open Heaven has set off a tsunami across the universe. Now the afterlife is falling apart because of the ensuing warfare. And when Heaven finds out Slim is close by, the angels put a fat bounty on his head.

It's one thing to ride with a ferocious criminal pack across the treacherous plains - it's another to do it when everyone in the land of the dead is itching to keep you there permanently. But Slim's not too worried. He's been fighting cosmic forces bent on destroying Heaven, Hell, Earth, and him for years. A pack of vicious bounty hunters, vengeful angels, and dangerous enemies with friendly smiles isn't going to stop him fixing the chaos he's caused...one way or another.

5 stars as usual

I love the Sandman Slim stories, this one is without his usual companions, since he wakes up dead in an unusual place. While trying to get his bearings, he's over ran by caravan of roughians on a religious crusade, headed up by the mysterious Magistrate. Stark, has to play it by ear, as to how to escape, finding some old allies along the way. The narration is on spot with MacLeod Andrews; can't imagine any other voice for Sandman Slim.

A tighter, but no less cosmic Sandman Slim

James Stark, aka Sandman Slim, is officially dead, but in his universe, there is all kinds of dead. While he tries to figure out where he is and why he’s there, he’s trying not to get deader.

As is my preference with this series, I listened to the Audible version, performed by McCleod Andrews. I recommend it. It’s a remarkable performance. Kadrey specializes in operatic rollercoaster ride plots and Andrews’ voice brings the book to life and keeps the operatic scope tethered to humanity.

Nailed it!

Kadrey keeps delivering the goods. Still my favorite series after finding Sandman Slim 4 years ago. I wonder if he hears Macleod Andrews' voice in his head when he writes?

And.......He's Back!!

Where does The Kill Society rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Sandman Slim series is number 1 on my list! After a couple of weak showings we have good old Stark back again!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the fact he wasn't someone else's lackey anymore!

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

MacLeod is as good as it gets. Always a pleasure to listen to one of his narrations.

Any additional comments?

Very excited to what happens next.......Sandman Slim with The Room of 13 Doors again!!!!!!!!

Narrator does great job. Too dark and political

Not sure how this got recommended to me. A lot of cursing and Darkness. The author apparently decided to really turn the whole story into his brand of social engineering. Groomers, Satanist and other people will like this. I enjoyed first few books but the last few have turned into a chore to get thru. Trying now to get thru the next book, but pretty sure I won't make it. I am tired of movies and TV pushing woke trash. Try to escape from it with books but yet here it is again. Someone should push for warning labels for us dim witted morons that do not enjoy getting useless lectures on sexualitu.

Forced (no spoilers)

The story itself felt forced. Like Kadrey can't quite, or maybe isn't being allowed to let go of Sandman Slim. It's decent, there's no arguing that. But it didn't feel like Kadrey's heart was in it.

In the past I have really enjoyed MacLeod Andrews work. This time I felt like he re-used a voice/character too similar to the past books.

Maybe I should have given this a 4 across the board.
In the past these two have provided some fantastic stories.
this time I'm just a bit disappointed.

Next time I'll let a few reviews go through before listening.

One of the best in the series!

Honestly, at the end of the last novel, I'd thought Kadrey had put the character on the shelf- it seemed there was no way forward and things looked pretty bleak.
Fortunately, this latest novel works some serious hoodoo and not only is it a great listen, it's got the bite of the first couple of Sandman Slim novels!

Absolutely worth the credit- one of my favorite audiobooks this year! 10/10
