Publisher's summary

Lois McMaster Bujold returns to the vivid, perilous world of her previous masterworks, the Hugo Award-winning Paladin of Souls and Hugo and World Fantasy Award-nominated The Curse of Chalion, with this tale of devotion and strange destiny.

The half-mad Prince Boleso has been slain by a noblewoman he had intended to defile. It falls to Lord Ingrey kin Wilfcliff to transport the prince to his burial place and to bring the accused killer, Lady Ijada, to judgment. His mission is an ugly and delicate one, for the imminent death of the old Hallow King has placed the crown in play, and the road he travels with his burden and his prisoner is fraught with danger. But in the midst of political chaos, magic has the fiercer hold on Ingrey's destiny, and Ijada herself may turn out to be the only one he dares trust.

Critic reviews

"Inventive, with engaging characters and lively storytelling." (Denver Post)

"Bujold's reworking of a classic romantic situation is distinguished by its setting in a well-crafted world and masterly creation of characters whose fates will keep readers turning the pages." (Booklist)

"Absorbing....Bujold's ability to sustain a breathless pace of action while preserving a heady sense of verisimilitude in a world of malignant wonders makes this big novel occasionally brilliant and not a word too long." (Publishers Weekly)

narrator weakness

I really enjoy Bujold's stories, especially when the narrator can bring them to life. Sadly, that is not the case with this book. Ms. Gavin's style is forced and occasional mispronunciations really irk.

Good story

The ending took a little longer to reach than I would have liked but the fact the characters behaved rationally the whole way through mage up for it. Great performance

so so

So far I've like all this authors books but this one while good wasn't as good as the others
I'd still recomend it as a listen if you are a fan of hers. Else go with one of her other books first.

I listened to this one at least three times!

I guess the only thing I can say is that I'm glad this was the first book I have listened to by this author. I say this after reading the reviews that bad mouthed the book and the narrator. I really enjoyed this one and I thought Marguerite Gavin did an excellent job with all the characters in the book. I found the plot quite interesting and had not trouble keeping up with what was going on and did not find parts that were difficult to get through. Listen with an open mind, and you will find this one throughly enjoyable.

Not my favorite Bujold title, but good - B+

Bujold is one of my favorite authors, and to say this is one of my least favorite shows how good she is. while I felt like the cast was a bit too large to track and stay invested in, the novel was still engaging, romantic, funny, and touching. Conceptually, this book does a lot to expand the mythos of the series in interesting ways, though the story was a bit entangled in the mythos.

The narrator has an unusual accent or dialect, and I found some less common words to be pronounced in unexpected ways. Her inflections were on point, but all of her masculine voices sounded pretty much the same and at times I had difficulty discerning who was speaking, or what was voiced and what unspoken.

Enjoyed the story, but not the narrator

The Hallowed Hunt isn't quite on par with Curse of Chalion or Paladin of Souls, but still a very nice book. I would happily give it another "overall" star, if it wasn't for the narrator.

The narrator does a poor job. Many times her reading doesn't match the description, like if the book reads "Good morning, she said happily" the narrator might read "good morning" so that it doesn't sound happy. Also she puts the emphasis and pauses wrong or splits up sentences, garbling them up. One or two little mistakes in a book I could live with, but these were too frequent to be acceptable from a professional narrator.

Less than the other two. And poor narration.

Any additional comments?

I can't understand why have a female narrator do a male main character? Spoils the whole listen.
