Publisher's summary

In The Green Pearl, King Aillas of Troicinet defends the peace of the Elder Isles against both the Ska marauders who once enslaved him and the wicked King Casmir. While organizing the unruly barons in the frontiers of his land, Aillas goes out of his way to capture the lovely Ska noblewoman who once stung him with her disregard. When he gets separated from his men, his dream of forcing the lady's recognition becomes the toil of dragging a defiant captive across lands governed by Casmir's henchmen. Meanwhile, the world of magic has gone on the move. The concentrated malice of the witch Desmëi has manifested as a green pearl, breeding lust and envy and death; and a sorcerer in Casmir's employ abducts the princess Glyneth, in a bid to draw Aillas and friends on a hopeless rescue mission across a bizarre and deadly alternate world.

A masterpiece of romantic, picaresque adventure, The Green Pearl extends the epic founded with Lyonesse: Suldrun's Garden and concluded in the World Fantasy Award-winning Madouc

Critic reviews

“(Vance) gives you glimpses of entire worlds with just perfectly turned language. If he’d been born south of the border, he’d be up for a Nobel Prize.” (Dan Simmons)
“Vance has the narrative force, the willingness to look very coldly at violence and cruelty, to not shy away…. He has an amazing ear and writes a beautiful sentence.” (Michael Chabon)

A wonderful book read by a talented actor!

I love this series and was so thrilled to find it on audible though I doubted anyone could come close to giving voice to the variety of characters contained within it other than my husband who's an actor and once read them to me years ago. I bought it and was duly amazed! He's very good and the book came to life for me again. It's a sublime series and Vance was a talented writer. The story is absorbing, the characters are living and breathing and Vance's use of vocabulary is delicious! I think I might listen to the series again right away, which I've never done! I recommend.

Better than Lyonesse 1

Great book from the Master Jack Vance! Unlike the first one, this started and ended with a great pace, while keeping the high standards of Vance writing!
Eager to listen to the final episode.

Amazing

This story continues from book one. In fact, it not only improves on it, its even BETTER, if possible. If you read Suldren's Garden, don't stop there. You'll be quite pleased with this continuation.

A Masterpiece Read By a Tyro

No one compares to Jack Vance, when it comes to creating an imaginary world and populating it with colorful characters. Each one speaks in a different manner and has their own idiosyncrasies. Vance applies logic to illogical situations, and one finds oneself wishing certain roadside friendships could go on and on. It is a pleasure to give five stars to the story.

It is a pity that such an excellent book was not given into the hands of a comparable narrator.

The only reason the narrator did not get only one star, was because he could do old men's voices fairly well, and (unlike Robertson Dean) when he did women's voices, he did not sound like a teen-aged castrato. with an unaccountably breaking voice.

He needs to pre-read the book to someone older, and have his plethora of mispronunciations corrected.

He also needs to not end his sentences with exactly the same inflection, every frighin' time.

He also needs to vary the cadences of the sentences, according to what is occurring. People who are trying to explain delicate matters (e.g., Sir Tristano) tend to speak slower. People who are trying to explain away something hurry their speech.

Still, the narrator has potential. He has a good voice. He could be a fine narrator if he applies himself.

Excellent

I loved it! Jack Vance is a great author. I have already downloaded the last book and I'm going to start it now. I can't wait to see how it all ends.

Classic Vance read exquisitely

If you love Vance, this second book of his epic fantasy trilogy is read and voiced to perfection.
