Adventures in Space

I received this book for free. This is the first book in the series I have listened to. The book did a good job of setting the stage even for people who had not read the previous two books. Lt Chikage is a very nervous person initially with several quirks. For example she seemed very preoccupied with the Captain's cat. The cat seemed to be uncaring and sometimes spiteful despite Chikage doting over it. This ended up being a positive when Chikage was able to sense something was wrong with the cat, which allowed her to warn the crew about an impending danger. The Captain is your typical swashbuckling spacer, handsome, and crafty, Except he is sick and feels like he will likely die. He was another one of Chikage's obsessions among other things like expensive bugs she had to take care of. Initially I didn't like that part of her personality, but the narrator did a good job of conveying her apprehension and fear with quick breathless reading in certain parts. Near the end of the story you can tell that Chikage has grown as she starts to take more initiative and think for herself. Overall I thought this was an interesting book.

Twisty and a bit twisted

Warning for scenes of torture. Not graphic but potentially disturbing.

This is the second book that I’ve read in this series (I didn’t read the first one). It is another first person perspective told as a stream of consciousness.

This time, though there isn’t a cliff hanger, so I found it much more satisfying. I found found it much less confusing than the prior book, not sure it stands alone though.

Narrator did a great job with pace and tone.

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for a review.

Had a difficult time following the story

I'm guessing jumping into book 3 without having gone through the first two isn't a good thing. Science fiction is my first love when it comes to casual reading. For me, this is a story line I just could not follow. After trying 5 times, I gave up. I couldn't get a feel for which supporting characters were good, bad or otherwise. It was taking more work than I'd like to put into casual reading.
