Most Implausible Idiocy You'll Ever Love

Tried to keep this mostly light on the spoilers, but still. LIGHT SPOILERS!

Okay. Lets start right now and say that the story is kinda stupid. All the way through. It silly and stupid. But its so much freaking fun that it worth every stupid moment.

The story can be summed up in a few simple words. "Squirrel girls are awesome. So is murdering giant Beasts. Lucia is exceptionally good at both." The main character is a dunce of epic proportions. She had a sad past that is used relatively often to make up for the fact that literally everything goes right for her. But she's really really funny about it. A lot of the story is Lucia self rationalizing. And not just important things like killing people or stealing, but also unimportant things like like... selling beast... parts... for the best price. Using people, labeling them as encyclopedias so she doesn't have to remember things (because she can't) and several other sub plots that all really make Lucia come alive, despite being completely unbelievable.

The story itself even makes jokes at its own expense, since despite being a relatively crazed murderess, Lucia never really suffers any consequences for her actions, and other characters can't stop noticing that. Rather than a detriment, this becomes more and more amusing as the story goes on.

Somewhere early on, maybe within the first two or three hours, a twist comes that really seems like it might change the whole tone of the story. It does... kind of. Occasionally this leads to some truly emotional bits of listening, but for the most part these are glossed over in light of – Accorn!

The story is silly. But its clearly trying to be, and it really, really works. Every bit of me wants to criticize parts of it for being so... soooo... stupid, but then I realize that I love it for the same reason. Its over-the-top, and it works.

The performance was incredible. Discovering the story has an almost second book already written was nice, but absolutely impossible to read when I know that I could listen to the sequel performed by Mare Trevathan, if I just wait long enough. I don't know why but I never got tired of her shouting "Unrelenting Path of Slaughter: Breaking Blade!" over and over again. Some people might (because it gets used. Alot.) but I found it amusing as hell.

The story has a semblance of plot, that really all centers around Lucia living up to the Godking's Legacy. The romance is cheesy and barely there, but what's there is is adorable. The characters are interesting, the dialogue is often times laugh out loud funny, and the climb to the top is apparently hilariously easy.

Torturing of Wolf Spear Spirits, and "So Gory its Silly" aside, this was a highly enjoyable read. I think another reviewer said "Deadpool-esque type character who doesn't care about murder, but still considers themselves a good person." I'd relate her more to Lina Inverse. If TV Tropes were used to describe her, "Obliviously Evil" would be her defining character trait. That Bruce Lee quote also really seems like it was pure inspiration for this story. "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." You'll get it, if you read.

Lucia isn't a good person. She's practically a villain. But with a pretty amusing array of side characters (especially later in the book), a rather surprising betrayal plus an amusingly twisted goal holding the plot together, and a sheer hilarious propensity for things somehow going right for Lucia when they really really shouldn't, you'll like her anyway.

4/5, and will definitely be buying the sequel.

I should also mention again that the performance was exceptionally good. Not exactly sure if that's a compliment since I'm saying Mare is particularly good at sounding juuuust a bit airheaded, but I am saying that I really enjoyed the narration. :D

give it an hour or two

at first i wasn't a fan of the book. really i dropped the credit because of the cover art for it, sue me cute girls with ears and tails are cute, but when you really get down into the book it really does come alive. i started to really relate to the two MCs, and as they started to care more and more for each other i found that i was as well. I don't often take time to write these, but i really think if you give this time you'll learn to care for these characters as much as i do. I would read more of what this author has to offer. even if the references to Stockholm syndrome was a bit jarring at first first for a fantasy book.

great job

Implied sex only. Well written and unpredictable, its nice to hear something so new and different. Also, the audio reader did a great job matching their voice to the feelings from the words. that is something i find most audio readers have a hard time doing. so great job to both writer and reader

What the Hell (Kinda Spoilers)

I got this book thinking it would be good, I thought I could trust the reviews of my fellow audible listeners.

Boy was I wrong

All of them say that the first hour or two is horrendous to get through, but then t gets better. For me, that was completely false. I continued on through the book, getting more and more.... angry that it hadn’t really picked up at all, it was more like trying to listen to the angry rants of a drugged out, completely crazy homeless person. I swear to god, the character shouting “Breaking Blade” at the top of her lungs continuously is completely stupid, it’s not even funny when they do it either, the voice actor hired for this made the whole thing feel too light hearted and caddy. The main character is a complete sociopath except in the very beginning, any character building is completely skipped over (of which there is little in the first place) and the characters attitude and demeanor never once goes through a change anywhere in the book. Completely self centered and narcissistic. This book seems almost like it was based around ideas like Final Fantasy, Dragon Ball Z, and other media, which does not translate well into book format. Mini-maps? Stockholm Syndrome? In a world where they still use rudimentary tools and have only started coming out with higher levels of magic, the last thing they should know of is Earthen Sayings and Metaphors. Of which there are too many. And this book makes it CLEAR that science is not something they generally accept, which means that sayings like Stockholm Syndrome, a legit psychological disorder, should not be a thing. Do not read this book expecting an enjoyable experience, it is Disjointed, random, and poorly structured. The author decided that writing so that ninety percent of the scenes we see are dialog, we don’t really get to hear about what’s happening too often, unless someone is saying it is happening.

I feel sorry that I have to leave this review, but I feel that it’s a PSA more than a negative review. The 4.5 star rating or whatever this book has is not what this book is worth, maybe... maybe it is 3 stars if you can find a plot somewhere in the books, maybe if you can find a good ending, maybe if you can find compelling characters... but it does not deserve its high rating.

self centered uncaring jerk

so I'm about three and a half hours in. by this point in a book that is this short you're supposed to show at least some redeeming qualities in your main character! instead you get a self-centered uncaring jerk that starves her companions and tries to kill them at every instance. I have never ran into a main character that I've hated this much in a book and I read books where the main character is the bad guy.

just finished this book the main character is a psychopath. If I could give negative stars I would

The blind leading the blind

The mental retardation of the sword and the beast girl was kind of cute at first, but Lucia's baby doll voice, much like a 1950's house wife in a sitcom, becomes like mental nails on a chalk board after an hour or two.

Do not buy if you like your MC to have an average level of intellect.

Surprising

This was surprisingly good. It's well written and funny. Thd narration is passed like a baton between the characters which at the beginning of the book is a little annoying but soon fixates on the MC who despite being an idiot who cannot read knows phrases like "deus ex machina".

I can't believe that I listened to that.

Mare Trevathan did a great job performing, but the story was unbelievable. I wish I had stopped after the first hour, but it was like watching a train wreck happen. I just couldn't stop it.

Great performance, terrible book

No idea how this book is rated so highly. I can develop no empathy for the main character, the book rehashes most scenes from two points of view, and it is sorely predictable and slow. Sure, it's a parody, I get it, just not a good one.
