Publisher's Summary

The Dark has nearly consumed the planet. Men and beasts have been stripped of their minds, their bodies twisted to serve the Master's will. Her army now numbers in the trillions and is led by two supreme generals. Even the mages have no power to stop her. Driving the survivors to a last bastion of freedom, she calls for the decimated army to surrender.

But mankind stands defiant.

From the ashes of nations the people have united, and together they brace for the impending storm. Bereft of retreat or refuge, they hold to a single hope - that the Oracle can destroy the Dark before everyone is slaughtered. Facing the end, the Oracle must rise to her birthright and find that which can cleanse the Earth of darkness.

"Fight, Fight, Fight, then Deus Ex."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Too many passages of fighting. Just way too many. And they seemed to get a little repetitive. After 50 fights against OVERWHELMING odds, you kind of start to lose a little something for the fighters. Especially after they do some of the stupidest stuff ever. Hey, let's leave this OP guy alive - who pops back up to kick your teeth in. Didn't see that coming? I did.

If you’ve listened to books by Ben Hale before, how does this one compare?

Other than the fact he kept confusing Derrick's voice with Iris, awesome.

What three words best describe Derek Perkins’s voice?

    I don't know.

Do you think The Forge of Light needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Maybe because it would be almost interesting to see if he could write more than three paragraphs without a 20 paragraph BAH fight scene. The ending was pretty optimistic, despite how dark the whole series was. Don't see how it can continue.

    Any additional comments?

I"M DONE. YEAH. So dark! Almost depressing. SPOILERS: You killed Jack? and Breaker? and most terribly of all Hawk - once. But a jerk like Cayden gets two or three? Really? And isn't the myth "from the ashes, the Phoenix will rise"? That you didn't is one of the biggest FAILS of these novels. What's up with that? What's the point of Hawk being a phoenix? What? OOh that still gets my goat. And all those WTH moments. And no last words from Iris? Ugh!

Finally wrapped up the story. the first 4 books were pretty good. This one is all about the last big war. It did get kinda old. Narrator was good though.

Right at the end, it was a little bit, naive, but the story as a whole was fantastic and paid off all of the threads that had been started in the earlier books

"Huh... I see what you did there."

Most avid fantasy readers will recognize the plot and character tropes spread liberally throughout these books. That is not to say they are poorly written; the style and tone are competently executed, and the author did a fair job of keeping me guessing at what might happen next. There was, however, a fairly clear pattern:

    SPOILERS

The heroes are thwarted at every turn and everyone they're trying to protect dies until they eventually find the giant reset button that turns off the insurmountable bad guy. Ultimately, the point of the story seemed to be "Just hang in there and eventually it will all be over". Or "Willpower is stronger than luck". I don't know, there were a couple of messages tossed in there somewhere, but none of them quite hit the mark as an overarching theme.

The narrator did a fair job of reading the story and creating unique character voices, but it was slightly confusing having characters who are clearly described as American being portrayed with UK accents.

    "Ben and Derek RocK!"
What made the experience of listening to The Forge of Light the most enjoyable?

Derek has to be one of the best readers that I have listened to.

What other book might you compare The Forge of Light to and why?

    Dragonvein.

    Any additional comments?

This book has great depth and appears to have multiple series broken off from it. I especially liked how it has expanded from epic times with elves, dwarves, and mages to adding modern military and spy issues to the later books.

"Fantastic ending to a great series."

I enjoyed every minute of this audio book. This was such a great ending to what was a fantastic series. I have really enjoyed every book that Ben hale has written and I can't wait to find out what comes next. Another great narration from Dereck I loved every minute. If you want a series that has action and adventure with magic and fantacey then give this series ago, you won't be disappointed.
