Publisher's summary

The highly anticipated follow-up to William R. Forstchen's New York Times best-sellers, One Second After and One Year After, The Final Day immerses listeners once more in the story of our nation's struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse wipes out all electricity and plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and terror.

After defeating the designs of the alleged federal government, John Matherson and his community have returned their attention to restoring the technologies and social order that existed prior to the EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) attack. Then the government announces that it is ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what's left of the US Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states.

The man sent to confront John is General Bob Scales, John's old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days. Will General Scales follow orders, or might he be the crucial turning point in the quest for an America that is again united? As the dubious Federal government increasingly curtails liberty and trades away sovereignty, it might just get exactly what it fears: revolution.

Should have kept with former narrator

Great story but shouldn't have switched readers. This one in the new voice made Matheson sound weak, and frail. Really changed the essence of who he was in the first two books. Unfortunate.

Well done.

Wish there was more to read. Plot could and should still continue to other books.

An ending that makes sense!

I have loved this series. It has been one of the best series of this genre that I have read. One Second After is such a realistic and "true to actual possibilities" novel...I simply loved it. Forstchen has created an experience in these books that I will remember for a long time.

In The Final Day, the culmination of the past 3 years since "The Day" is wrapped up. However, there is not a neat and tidy bow placed on the plot like you get in a lot of books. There are some questions answered, and some twist and turns that leave you breathless, but the author stays true to his attempt to keep the books realistic. The main characters are flawed and weak in some ways, and brave and perfect in others. Just like people in real life!

Excellent writing and narration. I will, without a doubt, read these books again. Bravo!

Powerful end to the series

While at first it had seemed to start a bit slowly and I struggled to bridge One Year After to this book, it was worth the full length. At the beginning you feel as though John had changed; lost was his strength and some of his will. It took time to build and realize he had subsided to the hardships that the years built onto his already weighted shoulders (and soul). Great book and I do recommend.

I really liked the ending

This was a most appropriate finish for a great series. Really glad I picked this one.

Simple but sophisticated closure

Final chapter of a gripping story that comes to a close.....or does it?
Although, the story line maybe nowhere as gripping and devastating as the first offering of "One Second After", it does bring to close one of the most talked about post- apocalyptic stories in print. The idea of such an event is mind blowing to most, but a potential reality to many who know the truth.....like the boy scouts say, "Be Prepared"
