Editorial reviews

A seasoned chorus of voices bring awe and wonder to Clark Ashton Smith’s unique take on science fiction, fantasy, and horror. This second of five volumes of edited and curated "preferred texts" of Smith’s work serves as justification for a re-appreciation of this master of speculative fiction, the third member of the Weird Tales unholy horror trinity, the other two being H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Smith’s appreciation for human sexuality, fondness for ribald humor, and strong, female characters are all on display in these 20 mind-engaging, goose bump-inspiring short works that highlight the storytelling ability and prose of an (also) underappreciated poet.

Publisher's summary

Published in chronological order, with extensive story and bibliographic notes, this series not only provides access to stories that have been out of print for years, but gives them a historical and social context. Series editors Scott Conners and Ronald S. Hilger excavated the still-existing manuscripts, letters and various published versions of the stories, creating a definitive "preferred text" for Smith's entire body of work. This second volume of the series brings together 20 of his fantasy stories.

Another excellent collection of weird fiction!

Clark Ashton Smith was one of the true masters of weird fiction, a genre encompassing much of what today would be called fantasy, science fiction, horror, and such. Like his friend and correspondent H.P. Lovecraft, his imagination brought forth wonders and horrors previously undreamt of. He probably should have been included in the Gygax Appendix N. I loved this collection and can't wait for the next volume.

Great cosmic horror and sci-fi

I really love the mental visionary allusion the stories generate. I feel many times as if I am omnivisually experiencing the dialogs myself.

Fundamental Sci Fi

This author is new to me but I can tell right away that this work is foundational, influential, required reading for any fan of the Sci fi, weird fiction, and horror genres. I noticed innumerable ideas that have passed on through the generations down to the present day. A great find in a relatively saturated genre. Narration was great.

Good stuff

Fun, original, stories with wonderful adjectives. You’ll find fantasy, sci-fi, and horror (and perhaps others that I failed to name). The narration is grand as well, and the multiple narrators keep it interesting.

Poe/Lovecraft/Wells wannabe but ain't

ovcaisional good sections, but his endless silly descriptions of alien beings don't have the power of HPL's Elder Gods to prop them up, the way they did to HPL's more ludicrous descriptions. Good for falling asleep
