Fantastic!

As a big fan of the genre, I was a little apprehensive at the beginning, as the story is set 5 years after the collapse. However after a quick set up of the situation, I was hooked. It has a great story line, and perfect use of imagery throughout. And the narration by John David Farrell is second to none. It’s hard to press pause on this audiobook! I will definitely be reading more by Russell Blake!

Post-Apocalyptic Tale with a Western Flavor

I really liked how the tale unfolded just like the old westerns, with the lone gunman rescuing the damsel in distress. And it only got better from there with gun battles and good versus evil interactions throughout the four novels. The only thorn in my side while reading this was the continual betrayal of the primary female character as one who constantly fails to learn how to act in this post-apocalyptic world. I get why she might start out as impetuous and ignorant of how to behave when in dangerous situations. But after a while any normal person, male or female would have adopted different behaviors so as to ensure their continued survival and to prevent the need to continually be saved/protected by the big handsome male protagonist. The failure of the author to show growth in this female character throughout the 4 novels, shows a lack of understanding of women and their ability to cope in tough situations. Mr. Blake may want to study up on the role of women in the Resistance movements in WWII Europe or the Russian women of that same war and how they were even fiercer fighters than their male counterparts.

Fantastic!

This was an excellent read! The characters had great depth. The narration was marvelous! I was able to see each character in my mind because of the ability of the narrator to give each a distinctive voice. Well done indeed. The hero: strong, smart, silent and deadly. The heroine: a ditz...
Let's just say, I reeeeally would have been bewitched to put my bacon on the line for such a vacuous, impetuous, scatterbrained person...

Wanted to like it -main female character killed it

I really wanted to like this series. Main female character is build with many flaws but after a while the character gets downright stupid and nonsensical, I finnaly couldn't put up wit it anymore, had to return the series. Will try more by same author, hopefully with better outcomes.

I love the genre, but

This book’s target audience must be kids or teenagers. Plot is simple and predictable, and simple and predictable, and simple and predictable.........

Shoot em up male fantasy - argh

I kept waiting for it to get better, but after 14 hours, realized the non-stop fighting was just going to continue. Hard to follow along with all the gun battles. Boring. If I was young and a male this might be appealing. As I am not...blech.

Also skipped the chapter on detailed torture and murder, including children. Learned nothing that might aid survival in the future.

The length over 32.5 hours a bargain.

I stopped listening half way through, in a middle of a gun battle, naturally. It was not ever going to get better.

Not that good

Look, I don’t much care for the narrator. But the story just wasn’t that good. Predictable. Also the entire last book seemed like a rushed conclusion written as an afterthought. It was good enough to listen to, and I won’t ask for a refund. But barely.

I really, really tried to like this book

Maybe I have become spoiled with writers like Mark Tufo, Peter Meredith, Chris Philbrook, etc... I just cannot continue listening to this book. Some of the oversights in this book are just careless, and the author shouldn't have attempted to write about it without better background research.

Here are a couple of examples: Woman running away from the man that rescued her (can we say STUPID?) on a mare with a 5 year old girl behind her. Man catches up with woman/child and argues with her about the danger she is putting herself and the child in, when they spot the bad guys coming. Man takes off galloping his stallion to find a place to hide. Woman takes off behind him, pushing the mare to her galloping limits.... with the 5 year old girl riding behind her.

If anyone has ever ridden double on a galloping horse, they will know that riding behind another person is very difficult even for an adult. I cannot see a situation in which a 5 year old child could possibly ride behind the saddle (or even in the saddle behind the rider) when a horse was at full gallop. If it was done, I would think there would be much dialogue about how the child almost fell off, how she couldn't keep a purchase on the woman/saddle/etc... If the author had said the child was in front of the rider, I could might consider it plausible if the rider had enough upper body strength to hold the child while the horse galloped.

The other example: Woman and man dismount from their furious ride to the cover of rocks. Man leaves the 5 year old child with the stallion and mare. He instructs the child to "get on the stallion and ride away" if strangers come around. I am a 5'3" grown woman that would probably find it challenging to mount that stallion, unless he was really short (and the story gave no indication of that). This is a 5 year old child. She would be lucky to even reach the stirrups, much less gain enough leverage to climb up them and clamber into the saddle. Where are the reins tied? In a tree/bush. Could the child reach the reins, throw them over the stallion's neck, clamber into the saddle and then take off like the wind? Probably not.

There were many other reasons I decided to quit this book. I really wanted to like it, because 32 hours for a single credit is a steal. But my OCD about details has reached its limit.
