Publisher's summary

The near future. A UFO appears on Earth's orbit. Ignoring all contact attempts, it showers the planet with priceless artifacts. Choose: perfect health, $10 million, or seven years in prison, per the new amendment.

The night of the meteor shower, Paul and his friends run around the city, engaging in quick fights with citizens gone crazy, trying to obtain one of the artifacts.

But is it really selfless help the mysterious aliens are offering? What awaits a human who holds a precious crystal in his hand? Where will he wake up tomorrow? What if the first thing he sees when he opens his eyes is the blinking line of text "Loading location: virtual training ground Kubinka-Digital. Welcome, cadet! You're now space fighter pilot!"?

amazing story, horrible narrator

It was difficult to get immersed as the narrator seemed to be rushing through it

Terrible Narration

The narrater makes this unlistenable. He speaks way to fast. Good story but narration makes it unlistenable.

Good

I really liked the Play to Live Series. This one however didn't have much in the way of world building.
To really make a transition meaningful you have to contrast each world type. This one seems to rush into the part they wanted to write about without as much character development or meaningful setting description.

ok story

the book was too confusing and fragmented. The solution to all issues seem to be throwing technical jargon.

A slow start considering what I listened to last.

This was a cool book, very interesting and I'm excited to see where it will go to next.

A bit predictable

Then again, I said that about the first of the Play to Live series. Prove me wrong again, D!

If you love Alterworld, you will enjoy The Cadet

This series has a lot of promise. The storyline and character development lack somewhat when compared with his Play to Live series and the book's flow feels slightly...Jagged? I wonder if this novel was originally written in Russian and there was some lesser caliber translation issues? Regardless, the Cadet is an entertaining listen. I very much enjoy D. Rus's writing style and the way he invokes nostalgia for mmorpg gaming, blending it with pseudo-reality.

Riveting

Amazing story. It was like seeing a fully relized world from another perspective. Thank you.

begins well and the .... idk what happened?!?

The book begins well... but when they get into the VR training the second time it's like watching an YouTube video of an MMORPG. 75% of the book is than lost and does not tie in well with the main story.

Total CRAP....

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Maybe a 5th grader

Has The Cadet turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jef Holbrook?

Almost Anbody....RC Bray?

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Cadet?

I tried, really I did, buy I couldn't get more than a few chapters in... I was THAT painful!

Any additional comments?

The narrator reads like he is in a hurry. His voice is monotonous and makes me want to smash my hearing aids forever....
