Publisher's Summary

Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy.

The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world.

To where the monsters lived.

In The Boy on the Bridge, M. R. Carey returns to the world of his phenomenal word-of-mouth best seller, The Girl With All the Gifts, for the very first time.

I was scared i wasn't going to enjoy this as much as The Girl With All The Gifts and was I wrong!! I loved this from start to finish. The ending is amazing and I got so involved with the characters and the story never had a dull moment.

    "exceptional"

I normally hate this kind of thing, but the delivery, content and human context leaves me incapable of not wanting to hear more. Depressing, encouraging and sadly believable.

    Story
    "A great 'read'"

I found this a lot more entertaining than The Girl with all the Gifts because it was slightly more believable and it was less predictable. There are some twists and turns that work well and don't rely on a 'super - human' component, the same person doesn't get wheeled out to resolve everything. The narration is excellent yet again Andre at x1.25 speed it is still clear, concise and gripping. A good purchase, well worth a few hours of anyone's time for a listen.

    "Such a great story"

I thought The Girl With All The Gifts was excellent so entered this story with trepidation but I didn't need to worry. The story builds on the previous book laying down new layers of depth. I will be looking out for M.R. Carey books in the future.

    Story
"Not as good but don't miss it!! "

The girl with all the gifts was exceptional and kept a high quality throughout. The boy on the bridge is more of a bumpy ride. If you manage to emerge yourself you will love it if not you will still not want to miss it. What sets the books apart is that the world the author has built cracks every now and again. Things suddenly work differently and at different paces then in the first book and even in earlier parts of this one. I found it annoying that the story used these differences at critical points in the plot to kind of bend the world building to find a way to get the story to move forward. The editors should have caught this and forced the author to move beyond such shortcuts.

If you manage to get around this, Mr Carey plays to his strengths. He knows how to create characters and a good story. His greatest gift is moments drama that really touch you. You feel what the characters feel in a way I have seldom experienced. Flinty Williams probably help alot with her performance to achieve this. She is really good and lifts the story. Summing up. The girl with all the gifts was rock solid. The boy on the bridge has its weaknesses but they are bridged by a very enjoyable whole that will both entertain and make you feel.

    Enjoy

    "Even better than the Girl"

I absolutely loved this book. I actually thought it was better than the girl. Its set 10 years before so could be read as a stand alone. Not much I can say without any spoilers but I do hope there is a third book about Sam.

What did you like most about The Boy on the Bridge?

The story is great, post apocalyptic, A team is sent out to a hungries (zombies) invested landscape to find data for a cure....

It reads a bit like a road trip and WW Z. The characters are great and it ties in beautifully with the 'Girl with All The Gifts' (the 1st book)

I loved it - 13 hours of excellent story telling!

The narration (Finty Williams) was excellent - really brought it all to life.
