Publisher's summary

Even as the Imperium faces the renegade Legions of the Warmaster, the ruling Council of Terra is becoming paralysed from within by increasingly petty bureaucracy. Fabricator General Kane has seen his fellow Mechanicum adepts dismissed again and again by the High Lords - with his traitorous predecessor Kelbor-Hal still at large on the Red Planet, the political status of the tech-priesthood remains ambiguous. New alliances must be forged from the old if Mars and Terra are to survive the final battle.

Full cast of narrators includes Toby Longworth, Penelope Rawlins and Luis Soto.

A succinct and amazing novella

A great story that shows the intrigue and red tape of the powers that exist on Terra. A great list of narrators with special effects make for a very interesting listen into the politics of the Martian rebellion.

Binary Versions Debate

I listened to the version of this story in the ‘Burden of Loyalty’ anthology, and really it seems like a toss up between the two. On the one hand, this, as far as I can tell was the original version, and the voice acting and sound effects had a gravitas that the anthology version was missing. On the other hand hand, Jonathan Keeble on his own is unarguably within the top five of the best narrators that Black Library works with, and he could carry an entire book on the strength of his voice alone. Also, I think I prefer some of his variations on certain characters over those in the audio drama, especially in the way he makes the Mechanicum characters sound so inhuman without resorting to sound effects. Even so, either version of this story works well.
