Publisher's summary

John Flanagan, author of the best-selling Ranger's Apprentice fantasy adventure epic, delivers a second prequel to Ruins of Gorlan, the novel that started it all, with Halt and Crowley preparing for war against a near-unstoppable enemy

When the former Baron Morgarath escaped to avoid punishment for treason, an uneasy peace fell on Araluen. But Morgarath, now in hiding, is already planning his next move, recruiting an army of savage, overpowering beasts known as Wargals. Newly crowned King Duncan knows he must assemble his troops for battle.

To find out the full extent of Morgarath's plan of attack, Halt prepares for a seemingly impossible task - climbing the deadly cliffs of the Mountains of Rain and Night and venturing deep into enemy territory to spy. After all, the winner of this war could be determined by one wrong move.

At the Battle of Hackham Heath, the fate of a kingdom will be decided. This origin story of how Halt came to be Araluen's most famous Ranger - and how war will decide the future of the next generation - will thrill Ranger's Apprentice fans and new listeners alike.

Where The Ranger's Apprentice(s) Really Began.

Being 46 yrs old, and not caring what age these books are supposed to be written for, I can say it was an absolute delight hearing the story of the still new king with the brand new daughter, Halt and Gillen's first meeting, and how much Halt was really involved with Will's life before he became 'The Ranger's Apprentice'. Through the original series you learn to love these characters, so seeing them become what you know them as is a real treat. The epilogue, shoot, maybe even the last line of the entire book, may well be my favorite part.

Adventure and great accents in one!

We downloaded this for my kids who got hooked on the first story. John Keating does a fantastic job narrating and my kids ask to listen to this adventure story again and again. The story is entertaining and you get great descriptions. #Adventures #Rangersrule #Fantasty #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

All of the Rangers Apprentice books are awesome.

All of the books in the series are very engaging. And I've read them all. I even have them all on autobook. I'm fixing to start the series over again. Wonderful for kids. And kids at heart like me.

where are the proofreaders and editor

I noticed this in book 1 of the early years. I ignored it. I can't ignore it any more. This series is prequel Ranger's Apprentice the first series. In book 3 of R.A. Halt mentioned he had royal relations. In book 8 we see how close that actually is. Except for book 8 that has little bearing on story. So why in book 1 and 2 of this series is it seemingly constantly reminded? It has nothing to do with the stories. Then hair color. One character fluctuates between red and sandy. Another character fluctuates between sandy and blonde. The problem is that both are main characters. In this book Halt and his actions result in an innocent getting killed. No regrets on his part. Everyone knows from R.A the first series and book 1 of this series that a major battle is coming. Everyone knows that losing will result in many lives lost, especially that of the main characters. Halt was raised to be a king. He knew from that and his experiences that decisions can result in loss of life. So why was so much time wasted on criticizing the king for his decisions? Then there's the mention of Gillian from original series. In that Gillian is portrayed as a young man. Will from first series speaks freely to him. The implication is that Gillian is about 7 years older than Will. But in this Gillian is introduction and timeline is off. Gillian is at least 17 years older. I question that Will who is shy of authority would confide in him. The book ends with Will being placed in ward at Castle Redmont. In first series it's stated Halt talked to and received permission from the baron. In this epilogue Halt puts Will there. The baron isn't mentioned. This book is not even a quarter as good as book 1 of this series. I felt like author was trying to fill in space. The editor and proofreaders ignored major and minor discrepancies. I won't be getting any more books of this series. I stopped the Outcasts series for similar reasons.
