Publisher's summary

In 1941, Adolf Hitler didn't declare war on the United States. Now, in 1985, the Third Reich, stretching from the coast of France to the icy wastes of Eastern Russia, appears supremely powerful. With a powerful force of nuclear warheads and the finest military machine on earth, there is no hope for freedom for the billions who groan under its rule. Adolf Hitler's mad dreams have come to pass.

And yet, all is not well in the Reich. The Cold War with the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance is destroying the Reich's economy while a savage insurgency in South Africa - a war the Reich cannot win and dares not lose - is sapping its military strength. And, while the Reich Council struggles to find a way to save the Reich from its own weaknesses, a young German girl makes a discovery that will shake the Reich to its core.

But the Reich Council will not go quietly into the night.

Too Long

This story could have been told in half the pages! The author writes the story from the view point of a small group of Germans, while never expanding the story to it's logical direction. The global political implications.

Alternete History

What did you love best about Storm Front?

The detail that Nuttall goes into about how the issues that Nazi Germany would have had if they would have won the war. The inherit problems that a fascist government would eventually have.

40 years after a German victory in World War 2

The first Christopher Nuttall book I read was Ark Royal and I enjoyed that book so much that I have been willing to give any of his books at least a consideration. What I found in Ark Royal was a story centered on character development with interesting people, flawed but believable, thrust into events that threaten to spiral out of their control and this book is no different.

We are presented with a world in which Adolph Hitler did not declare was on the US after Pearl Harbor and subsequently the US became so involved in fighting Japan that we never did much more than provide material support for Great Britain in its fight against Germany. Consequently Germany ended up winning its war against the Soviet Union (although guerrilla war is still going on) and Germany is master of Europe, but not of Great Britain, which has an alliance with the US.

It is now 1985 and we see the main characters in the world created by the Nazi Party, but in which Germany has a failing economy and a government at odds with itself over how to proceed. A chance discovery by one character sets the events of the book in motion and we see how things play out. Mr Nuttall’s strength, as with his other books, is in the depth of character development and no almost one seems like a caricature of a real person. All the characters seem driven by natural and normal interests although I did find the way things ended up playing out to be a bit optimistic. Those readers familiar with the actual events of 1989 in Eastern Europe will see the parallels although I think it is a bit much to believe that a triumphant Nazi Germany would end up paralleling the world of the Soviet Union.

While I enjoyed Mr Nuttall’s writing and the way things played out in the book I can not say the same for the production standards of this book. The narrator did a decent job but I found the recording to be very difficult to understand and I had to end up playing it through 2 equalizer apps on my phone to remove all of the bass and boost the treble before I could understand what was being said. These are not complaints about the book itself and hence I gave the story 4 stars but I was unable to rate the recording as well. Still, in spite of all of that I expect to buy the second book. I found the characters interesting enough to want to see what happens to them.

So repetitive and lacking depth

Book would have been a lot shorter without the author repeating himself over and over.

serviceable

Good concept, ideas, and decent action. Mediocre writing, character development and a lot of needless repetition page filler. Would benefit from an abridged version.

Interesting and good

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book, however, it was a bit slow at times, and what the plot built up too seemed to only come at the last moment

Maybe Okay

I listened all the way through, so it wasn't bad but it's not one of Nutall's better series. He has some series I really enjoy and others I just can't get into. Trying the sequel to see if I like it or if it's another of his works I just can't get into.

The narrator was actually fine. I may have underrated him one star because the writing just doesn't have that zing. I bought this because I love a good alternative history and I'm German-American, lived there for University and it's a culturally interesting concept. Presentation really lacks something, though.
(Gimme another good 1632 alternative history like Flint's original)

Not Enough Alternate History

The premise is set in the preface that Germany "won" the war. The rest of the title concerns itself with the home front in Germany with little emphasis on how the rest of the world would be different with the German victory.

As with many serials, the end is abrupt. Pay up another so many dollars and you will be shown some more. :-( At this stage, not enough interest to go on to the further installments.
