Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - What makes Harry Dresden so essential in the world of urban fantasy is his incapability to ignore those in need, or skip a single glitch in the appearance of a case - it makes him a good detective, and it keeps his character steady. Jim Butcher has created a wizard who exudes the callous confidence a private detective needs to survive and placed him in our world - a world where you cast a spell or become a thrall, trade or be traded, investigate or die. Narrator James Marsters embodies Dresden at his core, smooth and solid, with an unmistakable outside edge of gruffness that leaves listeners with a hardboiled swing in their step. —Erin

Publisher's Summary

My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. As far as I know, I'm the only openly practicing professional wizard in the country. You can find me in the yellow pages, under Wizards. Believe it or not, I'm the only one there.

With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters.

somewhat entertaining. the story was easy follow and the plot was derivative of old sherlock Holmes novels. it should have began with Harry learning about his powers. all in all...meh...

    "Very POOR Narrator!!"

The person that read the book (The Narrator) is not very talented by any means. The story was ok. I won't be listening to anything else by this author or narrator.

"Enjoyable if you can suspend disbelief."

Quite a bit of mumbo jumbo without much explanation. I prefer more solid explanations than, "circles trap things, and that's the way it is." I did enjoy the characters, though. The plot is rather simplistic which makes for easy listening, but not much thought. The reader was quite good throughout.

    "First audio book"

I never listened to an audio book before this, so it came as a pleasant surprise. The story was awesome, James was pretty perfect as the voice, and it was a good experience in general. I'll be trying more audio books just because I had such a good experience with this one.

    "Fantastic listen"
    Any additional comments?

So even after watching the show back in the day and being disappointed that it was cancelled. I somehow missed the part that it was a book – a whole series of books. Otherwise, I would have started the series back then. And even though it’s been a while since I’ve seen the show, I still have those images in my head when I listen to Storm Front. (It’s hard to reconcile a blonde Murphy with Valerie Cruz. But hey, they’re my head pictures.)

Wanna know how I stumbled upon these books? Nope, I missed them at the local comic book store, focused too intently on the Doctor Who displays at the front. Nope, they were not recommended on Goodreads or Audible.

I was searching for the voice. The one that would help sooth my insomnia. And I am so picky, a random male reader doesn’t always work for me. I started browsing Audible by narrators. Just popping in the names of actors I liked. I mean, if Lou Diamond Phillips performed installments of The Twilight Zone, surely someone else I knew would be in there, right? Right. Stumble upon James Marsters and, guess what. He has a huge body of work on Audible.

So, now I have Mr. Marsters reading fluff to me at bedtime. This is probably why I liked Storm Front so much, and why I will slowly go through the series like letting chocolate melt on the tongue followed by a swallow of a nice Riesling.

Mr. Butcher has not written the great American novel. Please do not go into this thinking he has. It’s a fun read. And I like it.

Not everyone is going to like Harry. I, personally, do. I find it disgusting that we women have made the guys so afraid of being who they are. (By that, I mean, those who open doors for us, take our hands to steady us when our stilettos wobble, you know, old fashioned things that are out of date now. I would rather take that hand gracefully than fall on my ass screaming, “Don’t touch me! I can take care of myself!”) No matter how tempting it is to get into a sexist debate, in response to other reviews, my baser instinct comes out. I like this book. I like this series. I will not hesitate to recommend it to people who like magic and mystery. But I am not going to be offended if they come back and say, “What were you thinking? This is only a mediocre story of some basement-living loner.”

I haven’t read the entire series. I cannot with authority say it gets better later. In my experience, no matter how great the author is, there is a point in the series where the writing tends to become a pacifier to a public who doesn’t know when to let things go and enjoy the good stuff already there.

But you know what? I am going to let Mr. Marsters take my hand and guide me through the world Mr. Butcher has created.

I had read it before, but listening to it was just as intense. It helps that, not only am I a fan of Jim Butcher, but I am also a fan of James Marsters.

"This is the beginning of a beautiful Friendship"

This isn't the first ( or 2nd or 3rd...) time I have begun the journey of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Jim Butcher's Dresden is a hero in the minds of those he saves and yet considers himself flawed more than the average Joe. With a struggle against darkness, most especially within himself he is the most self-examining and self-doubting antagonist that mimics in a more fantastic way the turmoil of anyone struggling with self-doubt, addiction to darkness or a dearth of choices, none of them good. Dresden has given hope to the hopeless, light to the darkness & faith to the faithless both in and out of fiction. I began reading this aloud to my son when he was going through a dark time & I will be forever grateful to Jim Butcher for creating a character that has not only given us hours of enjoyment, but also quite possibly saved both mine & my son's life or at least our souls.

    "I want more."

Story was good but the narrator was fantastic. I would definitely listen to any book he narrates. I would get another book by Butcher.
