Publisher's summary

“The Jedi are keepers of the peace. We are not soldiers.” (Mace Windu, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones)

Mace Windu is a living legend: Jedi Master, senior member of the Jedi Council, skilled diplomat, devastating fighter. Some say he is the deadliest man alive. But he is a man of peace - and for the first time in 1,000 years, the galaxy is at war.

Now, following the momentous events climaxing in the Battle of Geonosis, Master Mace Windu must undertake a perilous homecoming to his native world - to defuse a potentially catastrophic crisis for the Republic...and to confront a terrifying mystery with dire personal consequences.

The jungle planet of Haruun Kal, the homeworld Mace barely remembers, has become a battleground in the increasing hostilities between the Republic and the renegade Separatist movement. The Jedi Council has sent Depa Billaba - Mace's former Padawan and fellow Council member - to Haruun Kal to train the local tribesmen as a guerilla resistance force, to fight against the Separatists who control the planet and its strategic star system with their droid armies. But now the Separatists have pulled back, and Depa has not returned. The only clue to her disappearance is a cryptic recording left at the scene of a brutal massacre: a recording that hints of madness and murder, and the darkness in the jungle...a recording in Depa's own voice.

Mace Windu trained her. Only he can find her. Only he can learn what has changed her. Only he can stop her.

Jedi were never intended to be soldiers. But now they have no choice. Mace must journey alone into the most treacherous jungle in the galaxy - and into his own heritage. He will leave behind the Republic he serves, the civilization he believes in, everything but his passion for peace and his devotion to his former Padawan. And he will learn the terrible price that must be paid when keepers of the peace are forced to make war....

Critic reviews

"Close your eyes, and there is Mace Windu (portrayed on the silver screen by Samuel L. Jackson). Narrator Jonathan Davis's voice is perfect, and behind him are the first-class special effects and music that characterize most Star Wars audiobooks. Even better, the writing is also first-class - this is a descent into the heart of darkness for one of the most powerful Jedi masters, who in Stover's hands comes alive with the complexity of a spiritual and physical man". Disheartening

I am sorry for this review. I love all characters in Star Wars storyline including their stories. I feel this story should have been much better than this. The story did not live up to my expectations of a Powerful Force user of Master Windu stature. Unfortunately, this story lacked cohesion, harmony and greatness.

A pretty good novel that adds to the character

if say is recommend it for people who want to get a greater insight at Mace's character, because in that regard I'd say they deliver. The overall story and characters except for Mace are meh, not delivered that well and they won't have any lasting connection with you. Story can also be a tad confusing at times. No problem with performance, clear as day.

Why only the abridged version?

I remember reading this book and really liking it. I enjoyed the audio version but I felt it was really chopped up and many details were left out for the sake of the abridged version. Not a fan of abridged but it was the only way to get this story. Jonathan Davis was top notch as always!

Very good book

I enjoyed it. The only thing that got to me was how impotent Mace was depicted. I had higher hopes I suppose. But, Nick Rostu was excellent comedic relief.

a fun story about Windu and his homeworld

Windu is one of the coolest jedi. we rarely get to see him in action. this gave a lot of insight into his character. i loved it. ending was a bit abrupt tho. like the end of a old school kung fu flick.

Great Story

A great plot, narrated excellently. I was excited to listen to this as I am a big fan of Mace Windu, the only problem is that some of results are not cannon. SPOILER ALERT!: Depa Billaba dies, while she is supposed to die by order 66, as was stated in Star Wars rebels.

Give us the full story!

It's my own fault for not checking to see if this was an abridged recording.

Still, as this was one of my favorite Star Wars books growing up, it is depressing how badly mangled this version is compared to the printed version. The most memorable lines and images are noticeably lacking in this version. Even new listeners will notice how disjointed the narrative feels, with motifs appearing but never fully developing.

Should they ever release an unabridged version, I will be happy to recommend that one. Until that time, however, it is what it is.

Mediocre

Struggled to finish, characters changed on a dime. Narrator was fantastic, but plot was muddy and uninteresting.
