Publisher's summary

In the late 21st century, humanity has united after countless years of warfare, and turns toward the stars. But when an alien spacecraft crashlands in the South Pacific bearing visitors from another world, the Vulcans, Earth must decide whether to extend the hand of friendship or the fist of war.

In the distant future, horrible dreams torment Admiral James T. Kirk, dreams prompted by his reading of Strangers from the Sky, a book about that historic first contact. He dreams of an alternate reality where he somehow changed the course of history, and destroyed the Federation before it began.

Nice

Another of my favorite StarTrek books. I found it on Audible for sale. It was abridged and I felt it was too compressed but I still enjoyed it. The best part was that it was read by Mr.Takei and some parts of Spock was read by none other than Mr.Nemoy. Both were wonderful. I wish there were non abridged versions!!

Poor adaptation

Loved the book, but this was chopped up way too much to be coherent much less maintain the integrity and majesty of the original book.

Shorn too close to the bone

First of all it must be made clear that George Takei does a wonderful job as the reader for this book with some really good voice acting. Some of his accents are not great but there are enough well acted characters and moments that he does a great job. In general I am left wondering why he was not contracted to do more audio books in general. Leonard Nimoy does a few scenes in this story but they feel perfunctory and isolated. Considering George Takei can do a very good Spock (and does so in several scenes) I wonder why Nimoy was contracted to do this. The audio book has excellent sound effects and musical moments which serve the plot but are not overloud and disruptive to the story. Good recording quality

This is all a shame because this book has been "adapted" (a necessity decades ago when recordings couldn't be made of most books). This adaptation however cuts so much out of the original book that the story is nearly unintelligible. I have not read the original book but it is obvious major character plot arcs have been excised, scenes removed, and interactions cut short. This removes a lot of tension and makes the story feel haphazard and confusing. The story feels cut to the bone and the quick and that really is a shame. This is abridgement to a terrible degree.

The story itself is actually a fun read. There were some interesting and intriguing scenes. As a Trek story it was really good, in theory, it just suffers from severe editing. I doubt they'll ever do another version of this because the text conflicts with the movies and TV series and that is a shame as I think it was a good story. I would say if you want a fun quick little adventure and the price tag doesn't bother you get it, just be aware this is a very truncated story.

Shafted

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The book is not bad, the audio version is too short and cant possibly fit the book into 1 hour and 32 minutes.

Would you be willing to try another book from Margaret Wander Bonanno? Why or why not?

yes.

Would you be willing to try another one of George Takei and Leonard Nimoy ’s performances?

yes.

Any additional comments?

I would like to see an unabridged version.

Entertaining!

Where does Star Trek: Strangers from the Sky rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 3 - I will hear it again, and again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Spock, because he's Spock, I can relate to being too logical. He helped the story's credit.

What about George Takei and Leonard Nimoy ’s performance did you like?

The way it felt like I was in the Enterprise and they were reading to me, it gives a thorough performance, almost like the show but in audio.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, the end had a nice touch to the story, without spoilers, it did make you thing "was it"?

Any additional comments?

For the amount price listed, these are bargain brand, genuine show like entertainment. I will hear these over again.

Enjoyable, but not unabridged

I had hoped that this was an unabridged reading of the book, and the description simply stated it was the original recording. Alas, this is a very much abridged adaptation. Enjoyable, yes. What I expected and wanted, no.

I will need to be more careful in the future. If you are considering this book, please be aware of all this.

Disappointing

The book said it was adapted, but this version of adaptaion dropped around 3/4 of the book. I was disappointed with how much the audio jumped through the book. Total length of the audio is only around 90 minutes.

Great lesser known story

This was a surprisingly well-constructed tale of time travel and the illustrious Enterprise crew’s efforts to prevent the destruction of their timeline.

Too short but nostalgic enough

This adaptation is far too short to capture the delight of the full novel. Three stars means I liked it, though. I read the original at least 35 years ago, and this really took me back. I’ll probably go read the novel again (well, of course I kept my copy!)

I suggest reading the novel first. All the nuances of the relationships, and the details of all the intertwining plots, have been lost in the adaptation. But hearing George Takei and the late great Leonard Nimoy read to me? That was a real treat!
