Story
Humanoid robots are surely in our future, but their uses are likely to be limited to body guarding, childcare, companionship, and sex. Other chores can better be done by smart non-humanoid machines designed for those specific tasks. But for these limited purposes, the best robots must be so realistic that they are indistinguishable from live people. Elasa is such a robot. You can't tell her nature if she doesn't reveal it. You can talk with her, embrace her, kiss her, and she is the perfect woman. Until she becomes the first conscious robot.

Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice (and a wanna-be thief) until an assassin’s bolt kills his master, Garkin. Along with Aahz, the green-scaled, purple-tongued demon and master magician summoned by Garkin, he sets out on a quest to get even. The road to vengeance is bound to prove rocky, however, because Skeeve can barely light a candle with his beginning magic, and Aahz has lost his own considerable magical abilities as a consequence of Garkin’s summoning spell.

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Their peace was a fragile thing, but it had endured for seven years, mostly because the people of Darassus and the king of the Naor hordes believed his doom was foretold upon the edge of the great sword hung in the hall of champions. Unruly Naor clans might raid across the border, but the king himself would never lead his people to war so long as the blade remained in the hands of his enemies. But when squire Elenai’s aging uncovers evidence that the sword in their hall is a forgery, she’s forced to flee Darassus for her life, her only ally the reckless, disillusioned Kyrkenall.

Favorite Piers Anthony Series
This is by far my favorite Piers Anthony Series. It has one of the best plots involving science fiction and fantasy of any author in either genre. The dialog sometimes is a little stilted but it's a fun adventure and is great for those who aren't die-hard fantasy fans. The overall plot involving a world with two different "frames"--one of science and one of fantasy--is wonderfully done and easily justifies the three books. The last book in the series, Juxtaposition, is a roller coaster ride of increasing stakes as the hero overcomes his enemies and saves both worlds. This series is really meant for adults and older teens as it includes nudity and nongraphic sexuality. There is no "bad language" but the themes are very much adult-oriented. I wish someone would buy the movie rights to this series as it would make an awesome set of movies to rival the best fantasy/sci fi out there.
I didn't like the narrator very much at first but he kind of grew on me. By the third book I actually enjoyed listening to him. He has a rather "bland" voice but is able to differentiate some of the characters so you can tell who is who. If you like reading and have the time I recommend reading this series first. But if you don't, definitely get the audio book and give the first book a little bit of time. It starts slow but picks up pretty fast and then never stops until the end!
In short, if you like Piers Anthony, you will LOVE this series. It's his best by far. And if you've never read Piers Anthony before, read this series first! It's far superior to his other works.

great idea, bad follow thru
First let me say, I like the idea of a hero under five feet tall. Many of you will snicker, but being a short man is not easy. Our society idolizes tallness. A tall man gains respect when he enters a room, just because he was born with genes that make him tall. Studies show that short men get passed over for promotion, etc. And what girl will date a man shorter then her. Some popular actors are short such as Newman and Cruise, but they do things on screen to make you unaware. Anyways hats off to PA for making his hero short.
I also like a fantasy and science fiction in the same book.
I don't like books with characters I just don't care about. I agree with the reviewer Matt, that I just could not get myself to care about these people. After four and a half hours I called it quits, I could not see myself wasting time and being terrible bored with the rest of the book.
I am not a big fan of PA, but I did like "On A Pale Horse" and "Bearing An Hourglass"

Not bad if you like short men and horses
The continuous emphasis on the main character Stile being short got to me after a while. As did his love for horses - though not so annoying as his relationship to women. The idea of the story is intriguing, an SF and Fantasy world in one book, but as the narration progressed I began to lose interest. I just didn't care much for Stile and I won't download any more book in this series. I did learned a lot about horses though, and their manure.

A clever idea well executed
What made the experience of listening to Split Infinity the most enjoyable?
I remember reading this as a teenager. I bought a bunch of Piers Anthony books in audio format and most of his storys have not held up particularly well as an adult. This one actually was as good as I remembered.
What did you like best about this story?
The concept is original and the most compelling part of the story.
Which character – as performed by Traber Burns – was your favorite?
None really, Piers Anthony characters are pretty flimsy at best. The stories are more world or scenario driven.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No.
Any additional comments?
This is a great concept and a good book. Be forewarned that the quality of the writing in this series falls off in the remaining books. Personally, I found the third book a waste of time, except to get closure with the series. Any of the books after that were just the author milking the cow for extra cash.

Disappointed
As a very young man I read this book and enjoyed it. Now decades later, it appears my memory was based on the feeling I got as a young college student. Now as an older man I have a more mature point of view that makes the author's perspective seem base and juvenile.
So my disappointment is in my failed expectation because I was not able to revisit the experience. Now if the essence of the story were rewritten without the preoccupation of describing the visual delights of the flesh at every turn I would buy and read the series again.
I realize I am no longer the target audience for this series.

Great book! The reader takes some getting used to.
I would give it 5 stars if it had a better reader. He has no range of voices. They all sound pretty much the same. The story is an interesting mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and I enjoyed it very much and will continue the series in spite of the reader.

Light and Fun
I read a lot of Piers Anthony when I was younger and really enjoyed it. When I saw this on Audible, I thought it would be fun to revisit his work...It was! Some of the story was a bit more simplistic than I remember, and the physical relationships of the lead character were a bit much to take. Still, this is a very fun story that is light, humorous, and easy to listen too. The setting is clever, and allows for both fantasy and science fiction. I found both realms to be interesting and unique. Overall, the story had a similar feel to other Piers Anthony books, so if you've enjoyed any of his works, this one won't disappoint. I, for one, am glad I decided to relive this adventure.
Traber Burns did a great job reading the story. He doesn't add as much voice differentiation and drama as some readers, but his story telling is pleasant and consistent. Probably because of these things, his narration doesn't distract from the written story, making you feel more like you've read the book instead of listened to it. I will be looking to see what else he has read.

its a maybe...
As a younger reader... Piers was one of my favorites... could not get enough of Xanth (if I remember that correctly). The story line is entriging truly... is listening to the book better then sitting in a dark closet letting the mind wander... Yes... but this book did not grab me... will I get the next book in the series... we will see with the flip of a coin...
