Publisher's Summary

Science fiction masters Larry Niven (Ringworld) and Gregory Benford (Timescape) continue the thrilling adventure of a human expedition to another star system that is jeopardized by an encounter with an astonishingly immense artifact in interstellar space: a bowl-shaped structure cupping a star, with a habitable area equivalent to many millions of Earths. And which, tantalizingly, is on a direct path heading toward the same system the human ship is to colonize.

Investigating the Bowl, or Shipstar, the human explorers are separated - one group captured by the gigantic structure’s alien inhabitants, the other pursued across its strange and dangerous landscape - while the mystery of the Shipstar’s origins and purpose propel the human voyagers toward discoveries that transform their understanding of their place in the universe.

I loved it, Great hard science fiction,

Wonderful story, that kept me wanting to know what was next. Smart concepts, that have a lot of thought behind them, running through the story in a way that builds a world, and shows you it to you through storytelling. This is a clever and interesting hard science fiction adventure.

kind of meh

Narrator is boring. Story is boring, hard to care about the characters. Drones on a bit.

Should have been titled "Falling Star"

What did you like best about Shipstar? What did you like least?

Poor descriptions of action and inadequate character development made it difficult for me to maintain an interest in the storyline.

Has Shipstar turned you off from other books in this genre?

Shipstar did not turn me off to this genre, nor did it turn me off to Larry Niven or Gregory Benford. Not every story can be a homerun, but this story had a difficulty making it to first base.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last chapter, where the human crew were deciding who would stay and who would go on the mission.

Was Shipstar worth the listening time?

I probably would not have listened to Shipstar had I known how poor the quality; I was ready to move on to another book after 2 hours.

Not the Niven I loved through by youth

What disappointed you about Shipstar?

The first book was bad, this one was worse, Very boring

Would you ever listen to anything by Gregory Benford and Larry Niven again?

Yes, Niven is one of my all time favorites, Benford is not on the same level but still one I like to read, but I can't finish this book, I keep losing track of what is going on

How could the performance have been better?

Take out a lot of the touchy feelly stuff, if I wanted that I would be reading a different type of book

Any additional comments?

While the narrator is far better than I could ever be, I think someone else may have helped the story along

Hard to get through

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is the first book in a long time that I wish was abridged. There is too much unnecessary flowery descriptions which did not help with the story at all. Being a huge Larry Niven fan, this was extremely disappointing. Perhaps this would be a better book to read as you could skip over some parts to get to the meat of the story.
