Publisher's summary

The war of Troy is looming, and all the kings of the Great Green are gathering, friends and enemies, each with their own dark plans of conquest and plunder.

Into this maelstrom of treachery and deceit come three travellers: Piria, a runaway priestess nursing a terrible secret; Kalliades, a warrior with a legendary sword; and Banokles, who will carve his own legend in the battles to come.

Shield of Thunder takes the listener back into the glories and tragedies of Bronze Age Greece, reuniting the characters from Lord of the Silver Bow: the dread Helikaon and his great love, the fiery Andromache, as well as the mighty Hektor and the fabled storyteller, Odysseus.

Great book overall

Loved it! Although it did slow down toward the middle-end. Preparing for an all action third book. One of Gemmels best series in my opinion. Narrator great as usual!

Discouraging, but necessarily and beautifully so

Lord of the Silver Bow is a tale so full of Hope and optimism, but we all know how the Trojan War ends. This book, though still thrilling and beautifully written, marks the turn that leads us back to where we know things must go. It's more than a little heartbreakingly, and as badly as I want to continue down this path (and I certainly will, as The Fall of Kings is now downloading) I wish we could go back before everything became so.. broken.

Thomas Judd, as before, is a fantastic narrator.

So far the story keeps me

So far the story keeps me interested, but only because of familiarity with names and events as handed down in textbooks. I am beginning to think that Gemmell is not writing my favorite genre.

Amazing

I was led to this book after listening to many of Bernard Cornwell’s classics. This story — and the fantastic narration— made the sometimes stodgy Ancient Greek tale come to life!

WOW!

This book is beautifully written and the narrator performed perfectly. This trilogy needs to become a tv series. It could be better than a game of thrones.

A wonderful SERIES

Gemmell is amazing and I wish that this series was more popular and had a film adaptation. Being that its historical fiction, it takes many liberties with the source material but masterfully crafts the narrative to resemble what we know of Homers work. And Judds amazing narrative skill adds to the entertainment that is this series. Ive read (and listened) to many books in my time and this series is still my all time favorite. I read this series every few months beginning to end and its still fascinating. Please read it. You will not be disappointed.

Ending sucked!

Great book however end was less than exciting! Not like book 1 where I was pleased throughout.

"Subverting expectations"

As much as I love Gemmell's writings, he really butchers the Illiad / Odyssey in unnecessary and gratuitous ways

Big Spoilers below

Paris can't shoot a bow, why?
Helen is "plain" looking, why?
Achilles and Hector have another fight long before they should have met
Hector being a eunuch
Manalaus isn't a warrior
etc

It didn't bother me as much when I first read this in college, but now it comes off cheap
