Publisher's summary

The three basic human needs are food, water...and shelter. But in the late 21st century, compassion is a crime. You can get your memories wiped just for trying to help.

Papa Preston Walford's world doesn't allow for coincidences. Accidents. Secrets in the backs of closets. Or the needs of his own daughter.

Meredith Preston has reason to seek shelter. She needs protection from the monsters in her mind, in her history, in her family. And the great storms of a changing climate have made literal shelter imperative.

When a cutting-edge, high-tech house, designed by a genius with a unique connection to Meredith, overcomes its programming to give shelter to a homeless man in a storm, from its closets emerge the revelations of a past too painful to remember.

In the world of Susan Palwick's Shelter, perception is about to meet reality, and reality has mud all over it. The truth won't make you happy, but it may just make you whole.

Not for everyone

I would argue this is not a science fiction novel since the science (AI) and the fantasy (post apocalyptic) world in which the book is written doesn't really provide the crisis for the story, very much in the same vein as Station 11. I thought the book was articulate but overlong and preyed upon the fears most (every?) parents have for their children in a way that I found to be a bit too easy, like a jump scare in a horror film; it didn't feel earned. Many will enjoy this book but I bet just as many will not.

Edit, Edit, Edit!

Redundant! This book could have been a marvelous read. The premise is quite interesting. However, the author leaves us little to ponder because she drives home every possible point with an iron fist! Each motive for every character is dissected and delivered not only once but multiple times. Had I been editor, I would have cut half of the content. Had I been the author, I would have paced the story so the first half did not drag and the last third did not hurry to tie up all of the loose ends. In my opinion, a missed opportunity.
