Publisher's summary

The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.

The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

Not sure if I liked this one

First off the performance was bad. I'm sure the reader/ actor is talented. but this was not a good pairing. This book was a slight struggle to finish as this book felt like a bridge between to better stories.

Wrong choice for narrator.

The story is great but unfortunately, the narrator just isn't suitable, Instead of a grim, gritty and dark world, the narrator turns the story into a pantomime, with almost sitcom-like delivery.

At the end, i got a tear to My eye

you are given characters that seems like they är fillers.
they end up being the Ones you remember

New Narrator is no Toby Longworth

I've listened to all of Gaunt's Ghost and was a little worried to see a James McPherson instead of Longworth reading. He is a splendid narrator, but, like mentioned in other reviews, I can not get over his portrayal of many of the characters. They are distracting, over the top, or just leaving me going, "Wtf?".

Other reviewers only like bolter porn

I personally thought this was me of the better books. It has substance beyond more than bolter porn, where if anyone is being honest the last few books in the series, were just that.

A lot more actual character issues and humanity in here which I find interesting.

The voice acting was off putting at first but then I actually thought it was interesting, definitely 5 stars plus+ for the chaos ships.

My 0.2c this was better than many of the Gaunt’s Ghosts books (I’ve read them all).

Narrator killed this for me.

I was so excited to finally catch up through 12 books and I come to this. I don't want to rip this guy apart but MAN do I miss The big man Toby. Narrators performance leaves much to be desired. Every line this guy delivered didn't feel like a story it just felt like words being mindlessly ridden off a prompt. None of the characters had their personality or aspects of speech done well. EVERYONE sounded almost damn near the same leaving me many times absolutely lost as to who was actually speaking at the time. Maybe I'm biased because I started my journey with Toby giving my favorite regiment and characters in the 40k universe so much life. At times even side characters felt like major players JUST because of how unique they sounded. Pretty sure I'm just gonna read the rest until there is a re-record.

New narrator

Why have 12 books be narrated by one person then switch to a new one. Threw off the whole book for me.

Great story

The story was fantastic but I did not enjoy the voice acting at all. The acting misrepresented most of the characters as they’ve been done over the course of the entire series. For example Larkin was made to sound crazy and loonie where he’s always been made to seem calculated and withdrawn before

Outstanding

This is the best look into the 40k universe that you are going to find. All these books are have to feel of Saving Private Ryan in the grim dark future. I love the series and really hope they adapt ever novel on the series.
