Publisher's summary

Reese is only just getting used to running the Earthrise in the black-and with an Eldritch in her crew-when a trip to a colony world gives rise to a whole new problem: Hirianthial is showing powers that even the Eldritch rarely have, and that only in legend. He badly needs training, support and advice, and the only place he can find them is... at home.

To see the world of the Eldritch is a once in a lifetime opportunity, a thing of fantasies and rumor. And to finally meet the Eldritch Queen, the author of so many of Reese's windfalls! You'd have to twist her arm to get her to admit it, but Reese can't wait to go. But a court out of fantasy and a breathtaking land aren't enough compensation when they come packaged with a rabidly xenophobic species whose world is falling apart. The last thing they want any part of is some mortal interloper.

Is Reese ready for the Eldritch world? Better to ask: are they ready for her?

Book 2 of the Her Instruments trilogy, which begins with Book 1, Earthrise.

A Stepping Stone

After book 1, I couldn’t wait to listen to this book. There is plenty of adventure and the relationship continues to evolve between the main characters.
We discover more of the Eldridge world and of course, there is a traitor in the midst. How will this all turn out? Off to get Book 3.

Voices

I was disappointed with Reese’s chosen voice, it was too much a whisper. That the narration was mostly in a raspy tone the actor had some excellent choices of voice for most og the other characters but Resease sounded more like a long shore man.for some of

Love This Series

This is the second book in the Her Instrument series. I absolutely love this series and have listened to it over and over. It has spaceships and romance and aliens and fighting and diversity of characters. The captain of the merchant spaceship Earthwise is a blue-eyed chocolate skinned female human Martian. Set in the Pelted universe where animals have been blended with humans and dominate the universe. The reclusive Eldritch are white-skinned long-lived beautiful aliens. l enjoyed all of the narrations except the captain's voice which was a bit gravely for a woman's voice. These books would make a great movie or TV series.

Slow, very slow

Sorry to rain on this book but the overwhelming glowing reviews need to be tempered with another perspective. Book 2 is a bridge to setup book 3. It is two short stories: a western disguised as SF and Victorian style political maneuvering. There is plenty of room for world building but most of the time is spent on angst. The male lead gets some more character building, and lots of angst. He has to be rescued twice. The conceit of of having a male princess that everyone loves is wearing thin in this installment.

Overall the series is a nice relief from violence ridden SF but moves too slowly to keep my attention. I can imagine Andre Norton smiling at this writer in encouragement but I would like to see some depth and surprises added to the SF romance trope. The writer may mature into someone to watch.
